After a long wait, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally announced the schedule for the Tata IPL 2022 season. The 15th edition of the biggest T20 cricket league, Indian Premier League, is set to commence on March 26th after BCCI accepted the broadcaster Star's demand to start the tournament on Saturday instead of Sunday (March 27th).
The 2022 season starter on March 26th will feature the 2021 edition finalist Kolkata Knight Rider taking on the reigning champions Chennai Super Kings. The season starter weekend will feature 3 matches including a double-header scheduled for March 27th where we will see Delhi Capitals against Mumbai Indians in the afternoon clash and in the evening, we will see Royal Challengers Bangalore facing off against Punjab Kings who have recently appointed Mayank Agarwal as the captain.
The IPL 2022 will comprise of 70 league matches and 4 play-offs. While the dates for the play-offs are still awaited, the 70 matches are scheduled from March 26th to May 22nd. The final is set to take place on May 29th.

Adding some more spice to an already excitement-filled IPL, is the inclusion of 2 new franchises this season. The brand new IPL franchises are based out of Ahmedabad and Lucknow. The Ahmedabad based franchise is named Gujarat Titans and set to be led by the former Mumbai Indians all-rounder, Hardik Pandya while the other new IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants is based out of Lucknow and former Punjab Kings skipper KL Rahul will lead the new team from this season.
The IPL 2022 will feature 10 teams for the first time after the 2011 season. The 10 teams are divided into 2 groups which are formed on the basis of number of titles won and number of appearances in the finals. The fixtures of each team are based on the placement of the teams in these groups.

The BCCI has earlier announced that they will give their best efforts to make sure that the upcoming edition of IPL will take place in India. BCCI has finalized 4 venues in Mumbai and Pune, which are going to host IPL 2022. The decision has been taken to avoid long distance travel for the team camps. Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Stadium will both host 20 matches each and 15 matches are scheduled to take place in Brabourne Stadium while MCA International Stadium in Pune will host the remaining 15 contests.
