SRH Appoints Pat Cummins As Captain For The IPL 2024

In the latest developments from the IPL, franchise team Sunrisers Hyderabad has appointed Pat Cummins as the new captain of the side. The Australian pacer and skipper will lead the SRH team from the upcoming season which is scheduled to commence on 22nd March 2024.

Cummins will replace South African all-rounder Aiden Markram as the skipper who led the side in the last season when SRH had a poor outing and finished at the bottom of the points table.

Among the most expensive picks of IPL history

Pat Cummins created headlines during the IPL 2024 auction when he broke the INR 20 crore barrier for the first time in the league’s history of 16 years. SRH has roped in the 30-year-old pacer for a staggering price of INR 20.50 crore. He was the most expensive player ever in the IPL history for a few minutes before his fellow Aussie teammate Mitchell Starc got a whopping deal of INR 24.75 crore by the Kolkata Knight Riders.

A career defining year for Pat Cummins

Cummins had a brilliant year if we look back from 2023. He led Australia to their first ever World Test Championship final and lifted the mace beating India. After attaining the WTC title, he also helped the team to retain the Ashes urn against England before going for the biggest of all, the ODI World Cup trophy.

In October-November 2023, Pat Cummins led Australia to their 6th World Cup title by defeating host nation India in the final match.

Cummins’ reliable batter Travis Head, who was the player of the match in both WTC and World Cup finals, will accompany him in the SRH squad.

This will be his first stint as a captain of an IPL team although he has ample experience of playing in the league. In 42 IPL matches, Cummins has picked 45 wickets.

SRH captaincy issue

SRH had a hard-time having a reliable and consistent skipper who can lead them well enough if not the best. After shuffling David Warner, Kane Williamson and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, SRH looked to South African batting all-rounder Aiden Markram.

Markam led the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to back to back two title wins in the SA20 league. The team is owned by the same owners but they are not trusting Markram with the same position in the Indian conditions.
