Jasprit Bumrah appointed captain for the 5th Test as Rohit Sharma ruled out

In a major disappointment to the Indian team, Test captain and opener Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the 5th Test due to health issues. In his absence, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been given the captaincy duties and he becomes the first Indian bowler after Kapil Dev to captain the Test side.

The last time Kapil Dev captained the Test team was 35 years ago in March 1987.

Bowlers as Test Captains

Jasprit Bumrah has been a permanent pacer for India in all formats and he has accomplished enough to be handed the responsibility. Bumrah will become 36th Test captain of the Indian team and he will join the elite list of bowlers Test captains. Some of the top names in this list are Imran Khan (Pakistan), Heath Streak (Zimbabwe), Kapil Dev (India), Shaun Pollock (South Africa), Courtney Walsh (West Indies), Jason Holder (West Indies), Pat Cummins (Australia).

Jasprit Bumrah Test Stats

Bumrah has played 23 Tests so far in which he has picked 123 wickets at an average of 21.73. He has bagged eight 5-wicket hauls.

India will face England on 1st July in the rescheduled 5th Test which is the final Test from last year’s 5-match Test series which reached a halt after the 4th Test due to some reasons and the final Test match was rescheduled with the white-ball tour in 2022.

Earlier vice-captain KL Rahul was also ruled out of the England tour as he is scheduled to tour abroad for his groin injury treatment. After his exclusion, no vice captain was assigned and Bumrah was the no.1 contender to be given the captain’s cap. Wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant has been assigned as the deputy for Bumrah.
