The stadium was renamed in the honour of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister of India. The stadium is currently known as Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium.

The stadium is owned and operated by Ekana Sportz City and currently serves as the home ground of Uttar Pradesh Ranji team and IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants.

Due to the absence of grounds in their country, Afghanistan has used this stadium to host the home matches in 2019.

The stadium hosted its first international match in 2018 as a T20I match between India and West Indies. It became the 52nd international cricket stadium in India.
