England all-rounder Ben Stokes has been appointed as the captain of the England men’s Test team after Joe Root resigned from the position earlier this month. Joe Root was leading the Test side for 5 years.

Ben Stokes is the 81st captain of the side and was recommended for the position by the new managing director of the men’s cricket, Rob Key. His recommendation was approved by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Key said, “I had no hesitation in offering the role of Test captain to Ben, He epitomises the mentality and approach we want to take this team forward into the next era of red-ball cricket. I am delighted that he has accepted, and he is ready for the added responsibility and the honour.”

The England Test team has been in one of the worst phases, winning 1 Test out of the last 17 Tests. The team is currently at the bottom of the points table of World Test Championship 2021-23.

The melting point for Joe Root came after England’s 1-0 defeat to West Indies at their home soil.

Ben Stokes was earlier speculated to lead the Test side as he is one of the players who has cemented his place in the Test team.

On his appointment as the red-ball skipper, Stokes said, “I am honoured to be given the chance to lead the England Test team, This is a real privilege, and I'm excited about getting started this summer.”

England is scheduled to face New Zealand in their next Test series in England, starting from 2nd June.

Ben Stokes has played 79 Tests so far, in which he has smashed 5061 runs and picked 174 wickets. He is regarded as one of the best all-rounders of modern-day Cricket.
