Cricket Australia confirmed Andrew McDonald as the full-time head coach of the Australia men’s team. McDonald will take over Justin Langer’s duties, who resigned from the post in February after a series of circumstances leading to his departure.

McDonald has been given the 4-year contract as the head coach for all the three formats.

After Langer’s resignation, McDonald was serving as the interim coach and he was with the team on the Pakistan tour. The Aussies toured Pakistan after 24 years and won the Test series and the only T20I under McDonald’s coaching.

On McDonald’s appointment as head coach, Cricket Australia’s chief Nick Hockley said, “Andrew has already shown he is an outstanding Head Coach and the vision he outlined for the role during the appointment process was both impressive and exciting, making him our clear choice.”

The board has expressed that they did a global search to appoint the next head coach and also shortlisted a few former players but they felt that McDonald fits the role perfectly.

McDonald is going to have tough initial months with Australia’s packed schedule including a Test series against India and Sri Lanka at their home soils and a T20 World Cup to defend at home.

McDonald has vast coaching experience. In the past he has coached Victoria and Melbourne Renegades to domestic titles. He has also been the coach of Rajasthan Royals in IPL.

As far as his cricket career is concerned, McDonald is a good all-rounder but he has played only 4 Tests. In the First Class circuit, McDonald has scored 4825 runs and picked 201 wickets in 95 matches. He has also played 93 T20s in which he has scored 1743 runs and picked 82 wickets.
