The tendency for teams so far has been to field first after winning the toss in the PSL – Islamabad won the only time they were able to, so they will be keen to win the toss this time.
Read on for team previews, betting tips, latest odds and match prediction for Islamabad United vs Peshawar Zalmi, Pakistan Super League 2019.
Philip Salt and Waqas Maqsood were dropped last time out, overlooked for Wayne Parnell and Rumman Raees. With Parnell top-scoring in Islamabad’s defeat, he is set to keep his place for this match – even if his solitary over proved an expensive one.
Luke Ronchi fell first ball last time out and Islamabad will need their star batsman – man of the match in the final against Peshawar Zalmi last season – to bounce back. He hit 27 from 17 balls in the first game and added a half-century in the second as he looks to match his 435 runs from 11 games last season.
Asif Ali, who was in big-hitting form in the National T20 Cup in December, scored 36 last time out – matching his 36* from the first match – while Hussain Talat, who also scored 40 and 55 in the first two T20Is against South Africa, hit 30 last time out and 37 in the first game.
Wayne Parnell was top-scorer, proving what he can bring down the order with 41 from 20 balls including seven fours, while he has already shown good form in Sharjah at the Afghanistan Premier League – he took 13 wickets in ten games in that tournament.
Faheem Ashraf took 2-24 and hit an unbeaten 23 in the first match, meanwhile, to prove his all-round worth – and claim the man-of-the-match award in Islamabad’s only victory so far.
Islamabad United are defending champions and won their first game by five wickets against Lahore Qalandars. Faheem Ashraf’s 2-24 were the stand-out bowling figures as the Qalandars posted 171/8 and he was unbeaten on 23 from 11 balls in reply, with Asif Ali (36* from 19 balls) at the other end as United claimed a five-wicket win.
They have lost two from two since then, however. Islamabad posted just 125/7 against Multan Sultans, despite 51 from 33 balls at the top of the order for Luke Ronchi, on their way to a five-wicket defeat. And, last time out, they could not defend 157/8 as they slipped to a seven-wicket defeat to early pace-setters Quetta Gladiators.

Peshawar Zalmi made four changes after defeat in their first game – Wayne Madsen, Imam-ul-Haq and Umar Amin slotted into the batting order ahead of Andre Fletcher, Misbah-ul-Haq and Sohaib Maqsood, while Ibtisam Sheikh replaced Sameen Gul in the bowling attack. Having stuck with that winning line-up again last time out, they could be unchanged again to face Islamabad.
Wahab Riaz is in superb bowling form. He took 18 wickets in last season’s Pakistan Super League, before helping to bowl Comilla Victorians to success in the recent Bangladesh Premier League – including taking 3-28 in the final. He took 2-18 in the first PSL game of this season and followed that up with 3-17 against Lahore.
Hasan Ali outshone him against the Qalandars and Karachi, however. He took 4-15 from his four overs in each of the last two matches, to move to 106 wickets in 81 previous T20 appearances. Ibtisam Sheikh, meanwhile, claimed 2-14 against Lahore.
With the bat, Misbah-ul-Haq scored an unbeaten 49 from 32 balls in the first game, while Umar Amin smashed 61 from 39 balls in the second match. Kamran Akmal was the second-highest run scorer in last season’s PSL, and was also in excellent form in the National T20 Cup in December as he led Lahore Whites to victory. He started this year’s PSL with 49 in the first game.
Peshawar Zalmi lost their opening game against Quetta Gladiators, despite 49 from both Misbah-ul-Haq and Kamran Akmal in a total of 155/4. Wahab Riaz took 2-18 to slow the chase, but the Gladiators won by six wickets in the final over.
Zalmi bounced back against Lahore Qalandars thanks to a superb bowling display, however. Hasan Ali (4-15), Wahab Riaz (3-17) and Ibtisam Sheikh (2-14) were all in excellent form as they dismissed the Qalandars for just 78. In reply, Umar Amin scored 61 from 39 balls and Zalmi won by seven wickets in 10.1 overs.
Hasan Ali then took 4-15 again last time out, against Karachi Kings, as Zalmi restricted them to 109/9 in reply to 153/8 - Imam-ul-Haq having hit 53.

Islamabad United have won five of their eight matches against Peshawar Zalmi, including last season’s final in Karachi. Luke Ronchi was the man of the match in that game, smashing 52 from 26 balls and sharing a 96-run opening partnership with Sahibzada Farhan (44) as Islamabad, chasing 149 to win, took 16.5 overs to seal a three-wicket victory. In the group stages, both sides had won one each of the two matches.
While Betway are split, offering 1.83 on both teams, Bet365 have made Peshawar Zalmi favourites at 1.80 to win.
Zalmi's bowling has been the key to their two wins, and Hasan Ali is 3.75 to be their top bowler again with Bet365. Wahab Riaz is the same price.
Luke Ronchi could be the biggest danger to their recent form. He is 3.50 to be Islamabad's top batsman.
Peshawar Zalmi will be out for revenge after defeat in last year’s final. If they can get Ronchi out cheaply, as they did with Lahore Qalandars’ star men, their bowlers can bowl them to another victory.
