Karachi won the toss in their first game in Sharjah and elected to field first, unsuccessfully. They had batted first in their only win so far.

After struggling with bat and ball respectively in the first two matches, Phil Salt and Waqas Maqsood were dropped – all-rounder Wayne Parnell and bowler Rumman Raees replacing them against Quetta Gladiators. They in turn were replaced by T20 debutant Muhammad Musa and Englishman Ian Bell last time out, while Sahibzada Farhan replaced Rizwan Hussain. Islamabad could be unchanged this time, however, having struck upon a winning formula.
Luke Ronchi, last season’s Pakistan Super League top run scorer with 435 runs from 11 innings, showed glimpses of his best form when he hit 27 from 17 balls in the first game and a half-century in the second.
Asif Ali and Hussain Talat have both contributed some useful scores too – the former was also in good form in the National T20 Cup, while the latter was one of Pakistan’s leading batsmen in their recent T20i series with South Africa.
Ian Bell scored 54 on his first appearance last time out, meanwhile, to prove his worth up the order.
Wayne Parnell offers big-hitting batting and another fast bowling option, meanwhile. He impressed at Sharjah during the Afghanistan Premier League when he took 13 wickets in ten matches.
Faheem Ashraf is another key all-rounder – he took 2-24 and hit a breezy unbeaten 23 in the first match to prove as much.
Islamabad United have won two of their opening four matches. In the first game, they beat Lahore Qalandars by five wickets - Asif Ali (36*) and Faheem Ashraf (23*) putting together a match-winning partnership as they successfully replied to 171/8.
They could only post 125/7 against Multan Sultans next up, however – despite Luke Ronchi’s 33-ball 51 at the top of the order – and then failed to defend 157/8 as they suffered a seven-wicket defeat to Quetta Gladiators.
Ian Bell scored a half-century last time out, however, as Islamabad posted 158/9. Muhammad Musa took 3-25 and Mohammad Sami took a hat-trick in the final over to claim 3-22 as Peshawar Zalmi finished 12 runs short.

Ben Dunk arrived off the back of his Big Bash League exploits to slot in for Ravi Bopara last time out, while Aamer Yamin replaced Sohail Khan in the bowling line-up. There could be more changes after another defeat, however, with Awais Zia among the batsmen waiting in the wings. Colin Munro is in the New Zealand ODI squad and remains unavailable, however – meaning Liam Livingstone and Babar Azam are likely to continue at the top of the order.
Babar Azam is a hugely popular figure at the moment in Pakistani cricket and he hit 402 runs in last year’s competition. So far this season, he scored 77 from 59 balls in the opening win against Multan Sultans and hit 28 in the second game.
He opens with Liam Livingstone, who started this year’s tournament with 82 from 43 balls in a PSL-record 157-run partnership with Azam in the opening game. The big-hitting Englishman led Lancashire Lightning to the T20 Blast semi-finals in the English summer.
Mohammad Rizwan has top-scored in each of the last two games of Pakistan Super League 2019, meanwhile – seemingly the only Karachi batsman to cope during two poor batting displays. He scored 34 against Lahore Qalandars and 32* against Peshawar Zalmi.
The Kings now need Ben Dunk to show the form that helped Melbourne Stars to the Big Bash League final – where he hit 57 opening the batting, only for his team to later collapse to defeat. Colin Ingram also enjoyed some big BBL innings this season and will want to rediscover that form.
With the ball, Mohammad Amir took 4-25 in the first game to bowl the Kings to victory, and followed that with 1-21 and 1-22. Usman Shinwari is also in good form, taking 1-26, 0-25 and 2-36 in his three matches so far – following on from 3-31 against South Africa (though he was then very expensive in the next match).
Karachi Kings won their opening game of this year’s competition but have lost twice since. Liam Livingstone (82) and Babar Azam (77) led the way first up, against Multan Sultans, as they scored 183/6. Mohammad Amir then took 4-25 from his four overs to seal a seven-run win.
The batting has let them down since, however. They were bowled out for 116 in pursuit of just 139 to win their next match against Lahore Qalandars and then only managed 109/9 from their 20 overs last time out as they replied to Peshawar Zalmi’s 153/8.

Islamabad United beat Karachi Kings in last year’s play-offs and therefore just edge the head-to-head record. Luke Ronchi was man of the match in that game – he smashed an incredible unbeaten 94 from 39 balls as Islamabad chased 155 to win by eight wickets in just 12.3 overs. Colin Ingram had earlier top scored for the Kings, with an unbeaten 68 from 39 balls in their 154/4.
It means Islamabad United have won five of the nine previous matches between the two teams, while Karachi Kings have four wins to their name. They had previously one apiece in last year’s league stage.
Despite getting back to winning ways last time out, Islamabad United are outsiders with the bookmakers. They are 1.95 with Betway and 2.00 with Bet365, but well worth backing giving Karachi Kings' indifferent form.
Luke Ronchi remains their stand-out batsman, and he is 3.75 to top score for Islamabad with Bet365. Ian Bell, who hit a half-century on his first appearance last time out is 4.50.
Babar Azam and Liam Livingstone proved the destruction they can cause in Karachi's first game, however. Azam is 3.60 to be their top scorer, while Livingstone is 3.75. Karachi are 1.90 to post the highest opening partnership.
With the ball, Mohammad Sami took a hat-trick with the last three balls he bowled in the most recent game. Sami is 4.00 to be Islamabad United's top bowler against Karachi.
The defending champions have faltered after a winning start to the 2019 Pakistan Super League but so have Karachi Kings, with their batting letting them down. Islamabad United can get the win.
