It was a disappointing start to the campaign for Birmingham Phoenix Women who returned back from Leeds after a 7 wicket defeat against Northern Superchargers Women on Thursday. Skipper Eve Jones will have a tough job getting her players back in a confident state of mind in such a short period of time.
Although Birmingham Phoenix Women were beaten in their opening game, there was a very encouraging score of 46 runs from 36 balls from New Zealand opener Sophie Devine. Alongside Izzy Wong, Devine was one of two players on the side to hit a six against the Superchargers.
Eight bowlers were used by Birmingham Phoenix Women at Headingley on Thursday but only Issy Wong, Katie Levick and Hannah Baker picked up wickets. Tess Flintoff was particularly expensive, conceding 16 runs from five balls.
Birmingham Phoenix Women were beaten with 22 balls remaining in their opening game and need to improve with both bat and ball.

Playing at home in their opening match, Trent Rockets Women were beaten by Southern Brave. They make the short trip south for this game knowing that a few marginal improvements could be enough to get their first win of the season at Edgbaston.
The top order trio of Bryony Smith, Lizelle Lee and Naomi Dattani contributed only 19 runs between them against Southern Brave Women before the powerhouses of Nat Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet Kaur rebuilt the innings. Alana King impressed with some lower order hitting.
Opening bowler Alex Stonehouse and Katherine Sciver-Brunt were the only bowlers to go wicketless for Trent Rockets Women against Southern Brave Women with Bryony Smith picking up two dismissals. Spinner Kirstie Gordon will be looking to continue her accurate bowling from the last game.
Trent Rockets Women’s players lost in their opening match but there were plenty of positive signs.
Lizelle Lee (wk), Bryony Smith, Nat Sciver-Brunt (c), Harmanpreet Kaur, Fran Wilson, Joanne Gardner, Naomi Dattani, Katherine Sciver-Brunt, Alana King, Alexa Stonehouse, Kirstie Gordon
With both teams looking for their first win of the campaign, we are expecting a close contest at Edgbaston in this game. There are some top internationals across the Phoenix and Rockets sides, but we think Birmingham Phoenix have more match-winners. Our prediction is for Birmingham Phoenix to get the victory.
