The first edition of Hundred Women

Who will winWho will win The Hundred 2021

12 months after it was initially planned to be launched, The Hundred Women’s competition looks set to be a fantastic tournament bringing together many of the best players in the world. The women’s competition begins on Wednesday July 21, the day before the men’s tournament begins. We have picked out Birmingham Phoenix, Welsh Fire and London Spirit as the top teams.

Birmingham Phoenix are joint favourites and have a squad packed with stars. England wicket-keeper Amy Jones, who has been in sparkling form with the bat in 2021, will be in the side with Australia’s Ellyse Perry and India’s Shafali Verma. Birmingham Phoenix can be backed at 5.00 with Betway.

Welsh Fire share the tag of favourites and have a host of internationals to pick from. Australia are well represented through Meg Lanning, Beth Mooney and Jess Jonassen. They also have an Australian coach in Mattthew Mott. Welsh Fire can be backed at 5.00 with Betway.

London Spirit are coached by Trevor Griffin and will be based at the iconic Lord’s. England captain Heather Knight will lead the side alongside West Indies all-rounder Deandra Dottin and India all-rounder Deepti Sharma to make a strong team. London Spirit can be backed at 6.00 with Betway.

The image of the winners of the first Hundred trophy will be an iconic picture and we are predicting either Birmingham Phoenix, Welsh Fire or London Spirit to win.

Which Team will Win The Hundred Women 2021

Captain: Amy Jones
Overseas Players: Shafali Verma, Ashleigh Gardner, Ellyse Perry,
Other Key Players: Abtaha Maqsood, Emily Arlott, Georgia Elwiss
Coach: Ben Sawyer
Home Ground: Edgbaston

Birmingham Phoenix have a squad with quality players from across the globe. Cheered on by the famously vociferous Birmingham crowd, they will undoubtedly be impressed and entertained by the players on show. Australian Ellyse Perry has played in cricket and football World Cups and will relish this new format.

Shafali Verma may be only 17 years old but she already has five international half-centuries to her name. Alongside her in the batting at Birmingham Phoenix will be Warwickshire captain Marie Kelly and Amy Jones who is every inch an expert with the bat and the gloves.

Ellyse Perry may well be the standout player with the ball and the bat in the tournament. She will certainly lead the bowling attack at Birmingham Phoenix alongside England all-rounder Georgia Elwiss and Scotland leg-spinner Abtaha Maqsood.

The coaching team will be led by Australian Ben Sawyer who took Sydney Sixers to WBBL glory in 2016 and 2017. He also has experience as an assistant coach of the Australia Women’s team.

Captain: Heather Knight
Overseas Players: Deandra Dottin, Deepti Sharma, Chloe Tryon
Other Key Players: Freya Davies, Tammy Beaumont, Sophie Munro
Coach: Trevor Griffin
Home Ground: Lord’s

Based at Lord’s, London Spirit will showcase the new format at the venue which first staged cricket in 1814.

England captain Heather Knight will bring almost 200 international appearances and over 100 games as skipper to the London Spirit team. She has an international century in every format and will be keen to be one of the first to reach three figures in The Hundred. She will be in familiar company with England opener Tammy Beaumont who has hit five international half-centuries already in 2021.

In Deandra Dottin and Deepti Sharma, London Spirit have two of the finest all-rounders in the game, both with recent success in the UK. Dottin had an incredible tour of England in 2020 when she top scored in three successive ODIs for West Indies. Sharma hit a half-century and took 3 wickets for India in their recent Test Match in Bristol.

Trevor Griffin has plenty of experience coaching big name players. He was coach of Western Storm from 2017-2019 and is currently in position at Sydney Thunder and Sunrisers.

Captain: Kate Cross

Other Key Players: Alex Hartley, Sophie Ecclestone, Georgie Boyce
Coach: Paul Shaw
Home Ground: Old Trafford

Manchester Originals have a mix of English, South African and Indian players to choose from in the inaugural Hundred competition. Led by Kate Cross, the team are outsiders for the title but will certainly have an excellent team spirit.

South African batters Mignon du Preez and Lizelle Lee, alongside India’s Harmanpreet Kaur, will be entrusted with making the big scores. Georgie Boyce, a young English player who has caught the eye in other competitions in 2021, will back up the international stars with the bat.

With the ball, Manchester Originals have a wealth of English bowlers to choose from. Captain Kate Cross will provide the pace option with England internationals Alex Hartley and Sophie Ecclestone the wicket taking spinners.

Paul Shaw will coach the side. He is integral to all women’s cricket in Lancashire and coaches Thunder and Lancashire Women also.

Captain: Lauren Winfield-Hill
Overseas Players: Jemima Rodrigues, Nicola Carey, Alyssa Healy
Other Key Players: Alice Davidson-Richards, Katie Levick, Beth Langston
Coach: Danielle Hazell
Ground: Headingley

In Alyssa Healy, Northern Superchargers have one of the stars of Australia’s side who have won 22 successive ODI games. York born Lauren Winfield-Hill will be a proud captain at Headingley the home of Yorkshire cricket.

At 20 years old, India’s Jemimah Rodrigues will bring plenty of enthusiasm and runs to the batting line-up. She already has nine international half-centuries. Captain Lauren Winfield-Hill will keep wicket but also brings many international runs to the side.

Medium pace bowler Nicola Carey is another Australia international with a white-ball winning mentality in this squad. She will be backed up by Beth Langston and left-arm spinner Linsey Smith.

Northern Superchargers will be coached by Danielle Hazell who at 33 is the youngest coach in the competition.

Northern Superchargers Women Team Squad

Hollie Armitage, Ami Campbell, Jemimah Rodrigues, Lauren Winfield-Hill (c), Alyssa Healy, Alice Davidson-Richards, Phoebe Graham, Bess Heath, Nicola Carey, Beth Langston, Helen Fenby, Katie Levick, Linsey Smith

Northern Superchargers Women Team  odds

Captain: TBC
Overseas Players: Marizanne Kapp, Dane van Niekerk
Other Key Players: Fran Wilson, Tash Farrant, Mady Villiers
Coach: Jonathan Batty
Ground: The Oval

We are yet to find out who will lead Oval Invincibles in The Hundred but there are plenty of excellent candidates to choose from.

South African Marizanne Kapp may well be asked to open the innings, she has an ODI century and a strike rate of 95.82 from 81 T20Is. Equally dangerous with the ball in hand, Kapp has 191 international white ball wickets. Expect Fran Wilson to be a trusty batter as well with Scotland’s Sarah Bryce a potential breakthrough player in this tournament.

Dane van Niekerk and Mady Villiers both provide international spin options with Tash Farrant the best pace bowler in the squad.

Former Surrey wicket-keeper Jonathan Batty will coach the Invincibles. He is also a full-time Geography teacher, alongside Head of Cricket, at Caterham School.

Oval Invincibles Women Team Squad

Georgia Adams, Fran Wilson, Alice Capsey, Jo Gardner, Dane van Niekerk, Sarah Bryce, Rhianna Southby, Tash Farrant, Grace Gibbs, Eva Gray, Marizanne Kapp, Megan Belt, Mady Villiers

Oval Invincibles Women Team odds

Oval Invincibles Women are 8.00 favourites with Betway.

Captain: TBC
Overseas Players: Smriti Mandhana, Stafanie Taylor
Other Key Players: Danni Wyatt, Sophia Dunkley, Anya Shrubsole
Coach: Charlotte Edwards
Ground: The Rose Bowl

Southern Brave are just outside the group of favourites but have all the ingredients to have a good tilt at the title.

They have strength across their squad but none more so than in the batting department. India’s Smriti Mandhana has 4 ODI centuries, Danni Wyatt 2 T20I tons with a strike rate of 122.44, West Indian Stafanie Tayor has over 7700 international runs and Sophia Dunkley hit 74* on her Test debut in mid-June.

The bowling will be led by England’s experienced swing bowler Anya Shrubsole. She has over 200 international wickets across all formats and is renowned for successfully swinging the bat down the order as well.

Charlotte Edwards will coach Southern Brave. The former England captain played over 300 international games and is seen as a legendary figure of England Women’s cricket.

Southern Brave Women Team Squad

Maia Bouchier, Smriti Mandhana, Danni Wyatt, Sophia Dunkley, Paige Scholfield, Stafanie Taylor, Carla Rudd, Lauren Bell, Freya Kemp, Tara Norris, Sonia ODedra, Anya Shrubsole, Fi Morris

Southern Brave Women Team odds

Southern Brave Women can be backed at 6.00 to win The Hundred with Betway.

Captain: Nat Sciver
Overseas Players: Sophie Molineux, Elyse Villani
Other Key Players: Kathryn Bryce, Nat Sciver, Katherin Brunt
Coach: Salliann Briggs
Ground: Trent Bridge

Nat Sciver’s side are another who have managed to go under the radar in the build up to the tournament but who may well go a long distance in the tournament.

Scotland’s captain Kathryn Bryce always looks a class above whenever playing for her country and she will be alongside other quality batters in this team. Captain Sciver will be a consistent presence near the top of the order with Australia’s Sophie Molineux, who finished her domestic season back home with plenty of centuries, looking to go big from the off.

With the ball, Katherine Brunt and Sarah Glenn may be 14 years apart in age but both England internationals will be valuable assets to this team. The experienced Brunt with her pace bowling and Glenn with her leg-spin.

Salliann Briggs will coach the team. She has previously been involved with the ECB and been head coach at Loughborough University and Loughborough Lightning.

Trent Rockets Women Team Squad

Elyse Villani, Kathryn Bryce, Teresa Graves, Michaela Kirk, Ellie Mitchell, Sophie Molineux, Alicia Presland, Nat Sciver, Abigail Freeborn, Katherine Brunt, Sarah Glenn, Nancy Harman, Lucy Higham

Captain: TBC
Overseas Players: Meg Lanning, Beth Mooney, Georgia Wareham
Other Key Players: Sarah Taylor, Katie George, Bryony Smith
Coach: Matthew Mott
Ground: Sophia Gardens

Any team in any form of cricket led by Australia’s captain should always be taken seriously and Welsh Fire are no different. Meg Lanning has overseen an incredible period of success for Australia Women and will be looking to bring a similar winning mentality to Welsh Fire.

Lanning is not just a fantastic leader, she also has 14 ODI centuries to her name with a strike rate of 93.85.

Australia’s Beth Mooney and former England international Sarah Taylor will fight it out for the gloves. Taylor is recognised as one of England’s finest and most natural wicket-keepers of all time, which may mean that Mooney is able to concentrate solely on her batting.

Matthew Mott is a very experienced coach with links to Welsh Fire after previously spending three years in charge of Glamorgan County Cricket Club. He has been Australia women’s coach since 2015 and will know how to get the very best out of his compatriots.

Welsh Fire Women Team Squad

Meg Lanning, Sophie Luff, Georgia Hennessy, Beth Mooney, Sarah Taylor, Nat Wraith, Lauren Filer, Katie George, Alex Griffiths, Amy Gordon, Bryony Smith, Georgia Wareham

The Hundred Women 2021 Winner Prediction

We can’t look past the winning combination of Australia’s captain and coach at Welsh Fire. Between them they have broken ODI records and won World Cups for their country over a sustained period and now the challenge is to replicate that in a new competition in a short period of time.

Sarah Taylor may turn out to be the signing of the tournament. Obviously there is still a large element of the unknown in this tournament, but if spin bowlers are to be as successful as they were in the early years of T20 cricket then having one of the world’s best wicket-keepers will be a major advantage.

The other franchises will run them close and there could be an over-reliance on certain individuals in the Welsh Fire side. However, we think they will be the team to beat and will prove to be the best side in the competition and rightful winners come August 21.
