England successfully elected to field first in the first T20i and may look to chase again as they seek a series win to end an otherwise disappointing tour on a high.

Obed McCoy has been added to the West Indies squad for rest of WI vs ENG series with Andre Russell ruled out due to a side strain. West Indies were already without Evin Lewis, Rovman Powell, Keemo Paul and Kemar Roach due to injuries.
Nicholas Pooran top-scored last time out as he continues to excel in the 20-over format. The 23-year-old Trinidadian’s 58 was his ninth T20 half-century and second at international level, where he has a strike rate of 153.73 after nine innings. He most recently hit some big scores for the Sylhet Sixers during the Bangladesh Premier League and was one of the star batsmen in the T10 League.
At the other end of the experience scale is Chris Gayle, meanwhile. The 39-year-old was in unstoppable form during the ODI series, scoring 135, 50, 162 and 77 from his four innings as he proved himself worthy of one final World Cup next summer.
With the ball, Sheldon Cottrell claimed 3-29 last time out, while Jason Holder was tidy with 1-26 from his four overs. Cottrell also claimed seven wickets in three games during the ODI series and seven in West Indies’ three-match T20 series with Bangladesh too.
Holder, meanwhile, has been in good form throughout England’s tour, meanwhile. A double-centurion with the bat in the tests – as well as claiming seven wickets in his two games – he also took seven wickets in the ODI series.
While the form book has proved unreliable so far in England’s tour, West Indies did come into this series on the back of victory in Bangladesh before Christmas in the shortest format. They had previously lost five of their last six T20 matches, however, as they lost 3-0 in India and 2-1 against Bangladesh on home soil.
In India, West Indies’ batting let them down – scoring just 109/8 in a five-wicket defeat first up before posting just 124/9 as they lost the second game by 71 runs. Nicholas Pooran hit 53 from 25 balls as West Indies scored 181/3 in the final game, but they lost by six wickets off the final ball to compound a series defeat.
Against Bangladesh, meanwhile, they dismissed the hosts for 129 first up – Sheldon Cottrell claiming 4-28 – as they opened with an eight-wicket win. They finished 36 runs short of Bangladesh’s 211/4 in the second game but sealed a series win when Evin Lewis hit 89 in a total of 190 and Keemo Paul claimed 5-15 in a 50-run victory.

Sam Curran was a late addition to England’s T20 squad with Moeen Ali resting ahead of the IPL, but England could go unchanged after a good all-round performance earned victory in the first match. That would mean Curran, Dawid Malan and Mark Wood missing out – though Liam Plunkett’s place could be in danger after he proved very expensive with the ball.
Jonny Bairstow was man of the match last time out, after hitting 68 from 40 balls including nine fours and two sixes. It was a return to his better form, though he did also hit a half-century during the ODI series.
England have rested some of their biggest names for this T20 series, but Eoin Morgan continues to captain the side – the Irish-born ace hit scores of 65, 70 and 103 in the first three completed ODIs to continue his good batting form and he will be keen to recapture that.
Joe Denly will want to prove himself in the middle order, meanwhile. He hit 30 and took 1-28 in the first match having not managed to force his way into the ODI team. His most recent T20 assignment before this was the Big Bash League, where he signed off with an unbeaten 76 in his final Sydney Sixers innings.
With the ball, Tom Curran – another English star during this year’s BBL – took 4-36 from his four overs before hitting the winning runs with the bat. Chris Jordan claimed 2-16 from three overs, meanwhile including a superb one-handed caught-and-bowled to dismiss Darren Bravo. Adil Rashid’s leg-spin remains a big asset of the English bowling attack too, as the Yorkshireman claimed 1-15 from his four overs.
England have had a mixed bag in the shortest format of the game, beating Sri Lanka and Australia in one-off matches prior to this series, but losing their most recent series in between – 2-1 to India at home in the summer.
Against India, a batting collapse after Jos Buttler’s 69 led to an eight-wicket defeat in the first game, but they then chased 149 to win the second match by five wickets thanks to Alex Hales’ unbeaten half-century. In the third game, Jason Roy hit 67 in a total of 198/9 but England failed to defend it – falling to a seven-wicket defeat with nine balls to spare.
Most recently, prior to their victory in the first game of this series, they faced Sri Lanka away. Roy hit 69 as England posted 187/8 before Joe Denly (4-19) and Adil Rashid (3-11) led England to a 30-run win.

Despite England’s win in the first match of this series, West Indies still have a dominant record in this fixture in T20 cricket. They have won 11 of their 16 previous meetings including, famously, the final of the 2016 World T20 when Carlos Brathwaite destroyed Ben Stokes’ bowling in the final over of the match to snatch an unlikely West Indies’ victory.
Prior to this series, their most recent meeting was in England in 2017, when the tourists posted 176/9 despite three wickets apiece for Liam Plunkett and Adil Rashid and then bowled England out for 155 in reply – Sunil Narine claiming the man-of-the-match award for his 2-15 from four overs, though Chris Gayle’s 40 from 21 balls and Evin Lewis’ 28-ball 51 were also major factors in the 21-run win.
The bookmakers are split between the two teams on this one – West Indies have home advantage and a good record against England, but it is the tourists who won the first game. England are 1.90 to win with Bet365 and 1.83 with Betway, but West Indies are priced identically.
Jonny Bairstow was the match winner last time out and he is 3.75 to be England’s top batsman again, but the form of Eoin Morgan (4.50) and the big-hitting capability of Alex Hales (4.00) should not be overlooked.
For West Indies, Nicholas Pooran continues to win admirers for his T20 batting and is 6.50 to top score for the hosts with Bet365 but that is a gamble with such firepower above him in the order. In-form Chris Gayle is 3.00.Adil Rashid is 3.75 to be England’s top bowler, meanwhile, and was economical again last time out. It was the pacemen who took the wickets, however, and Chris Jordan is 4.33 while Tom Curran – after his four-wicket haul – is 4.50.
England have not had much to shout about on this tour, but their comfortable win in the first T20 was at least a sign that they can end with a series win in the shortest format. Sealing that in this second game would be a small confidence boost.
