West Indies are favorites to win
West Indies brushed aside England in the fifth ODI to win by seven wickets and level the series 2-2. The visitors will look to avenge their humiliating defeat when the two teams face-off in the first of the three T20 internationals on March 5. The match will be played at the same venue i.e. Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia. Live telecast is scheduled to begin at 4 PM local time.

Six of the last seven T20 internationals played at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium have been won by the side bowling first. Since the wicket at this ground is not expected to change much after the first-half of the match, the team that wins the toss here will probably bowl first.

With the aim of fine-tuning their squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019, West Indies have retained the entire squad from the ODIs for this T20I series. This seems as their strategy to ensure that the players who are in contention for the World Cup squad get to spend more time together. Jason Holder has taken over the captaincy from Carlos Brathwaite and he will be leading the West Indian team in this series.
Chris Gayle seems to have returned to his prime. The swashbuckling opener smashed two centuries and two fifties in the four ODIs and his current form makes him the real threat for the English bowlers. Nicholas Pooran is another key figure in this batting line-up. He is a T20 specialist who did well at the Mzansi Super League and the T10 League. Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope are the others who have the potential of scoring the big runs. Oshane Thomas, Sheldon Cottrell and Jason Holder had a very good ODI series and the Windies will back this pace trio to bowl well in this first T20I. Thomas was the most impressive of the lot with nine wickets. He took a five-fer in the fifth ODI and is expected to hurt England again on this same surface. Holder and Cottrell took seven wickets apiece in the series and it will be up to these two to rip through England's top-order in the powerplay.
West Indies is one of the best sides in the world when it comes to T20 cricket but they have struggled to win games in this format of late. Last year, they played 14 completed T20Is out of which they lost 10 and won just 4. However, the Windies do have a couple of wins in their last three matches as they beat Bangladesh 2-1 in their previous T20I series in December. Prior to that, they were swept 0-3 by India in India.

England have rested a few of their key players for this three-match T20I series. Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali and all-rounder Ben Stokes have all been rested and they have been replaced by Sam Billings, Dawid Malan and Sam Curran in the team's 14-man squad. Curran, who was overlooked for the preceding ODI series, is likely to make his T20I debut in this game. Opening batsman Jason Roy too will not be available for the series as he has flown back home due to personal reasons.
Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler and Joe Root were England's best batsmen in the ODI series, but with Buttler rested, the onus will be on the likes of Morgan and Root along with Alex Hales and Jonny Bairstow to score the big runs. Morgan hit a hundred and two half-centuries and the team will want him to carry that impressive form into the T20Is. Hales is more suited for T20 cricket and the opener could provide a flying start to the innings. Adil Rashid was the star performer with the ball for England. The leg-spinner finished as the best bowler in the ODI series with nine wickets and he is likely to make a big impact here in this match. Mark Wood was their next best bowler with seven wickets and the pacer will look to make the early strikes in the powerplay. Sam Curran is a talented bowler and he too can find some success on this pitch.
England have blown hot and cold in recent times in the twenty-over format. They have won four and lost five of their last nine T20 internationals. Their previous T20I assignment was a one-off match against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka last year in October which they won quite comfortably by 30 runs. Before that in July, England faced a 1-2 defeat in a three-match series against India at home.

West Indies and England have played 15 T20 internationals against each other in the past and the hosts lead the scoreline 11-4.
West Indies have won six of their last seven T20Is played against England, including the most recent three encounters.
The last time these two countries faced each other in the game's shortest format was in September 2017 at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street, England. The hosts, after winning the toss, put the Windies into bat first who scored 176/9. England, in reply, were bowled out for 155 and fell short by 21 runs.

The hosts begin as favorites to win the first T20 international of England's tour of the West Indies at odds of 1.70 on Betway, 1.72 on Bet365 and 1.68 on Betrally. The tourists find themselves as outsiders amongst the bookmakers for this game and they are being offered at a higher price of 2.10 on Bet365 and 2.05 on both Betway and Betrally.
West Indies did really well to come from behind and secure an emphatic victory in the final ODI to draw the series. They beat England in the test series and denied them a series win in the ODIs as well. Plus, the manner in which they won the last game is going to give them a huge confidence boost going into this game. The hosts also have the upper hand in terms of head-to-head record and they have won their last three T20Is against England. Moreover, the visitors have rested some of the big names for this series which means that this England side lacks a fair amount of experience. The Windies are one of the most dangerous teams in the T20 format and we expect them to start off with a win.
