ICC World XI are favorites to win
With the mission of raising funds for the reconstruction of two stadiums in the Caribbean that were damaged by Hurricanes, the ICC has organized a T20 international between the West Indies and ICC Rest of the World XI. The match will be played on May 31 at the Lord's in London with live telecast scheduled to begin at 6 PM local time.
TV channels: Sky Sports Cricket
Live Streaming: Bet365, Now TV, Sky Go
The Lord's has hosted eight T20 internationals till date of which five have been won by the side that has batted first. Also, chasing under lights at this venue is not expected to be easy. So toss is going to be key here and whichever team wins it on Thursday will probably elect to bat first.

Carlos Brathwaite will be leading this West Indies side that boasts of star players like Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels, Chris Gayle and Samuel Badree. Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis are likely to open the batting with Andre Fletcher and Marlon Samuels taking up number three and four positions respectively. Denesh Ramdin will do the glove-work behind the stumps. This match will also see the return of hard-hitting all-rounder Andre Russell in international cricket after having served suspension for a doping-code violation.
The opening pair of Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis will be the key for the West Indies when it comes to batting. Gayle is coming off an impressive stint in the IPL. He is the leading run-getter for the team in T20 internationals and can take the game away from the opposition if not dismissed early on. Lewis too likes to attack and could get the Windies off to a brisk start. Marlon Samuels is another reliable batsman at the top while Andre Russell with his power hitting can be destructive down the order. The West Indian pace attack will be led by Kesrick Williams. The fast bowler has taken 22 wickets in 14 T20s and he is going to be the team's best bet for making the early inroads into the World XI's batting line-up. Samuel Badree will be the main threat in the spin department. The leg-spinner is fifth on the ICC T20I rankings for bowlers and has taken the most wickets for the Windies in the shortest format.
West Indies have lost eight out of the fourteen completed T20 internationals they have played since last year. This includes defeats in their last five matches straight which clearly shows that they have been struggling of late in this format of the game. Their last win came against England at the Chester-le-Street in September 2017; a 21-run victory in which they defended their total of 176 by bowling the hosts out for 155. Since then, the Windies have lost 0-2 to New Zealand and have suffered a 0-3 clean sweep at the hands of Pakistan.
Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis, Andre Fletcher, Marlon Samuels, Rovman Powell, Denesh Ramdin (wk), Ashley Nurse, Carlos Brathwaite (c), Andre Russell, Samuel Badree, Kesrick Williams
Comprising players from around the world, the ICC Rest of the World XI was to be led by England's limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan. But a fractured finger has ruled him out of this match with Shahid Afridi taking over the captaincy. The squad now includes two players each from India (Dinesh Karthik and Mohammed Shami), Pakistan (Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik) and New Zealand (Luke Ronchi and Mitchell McClenaghan) and four from England (Sam Billings, Sam Curran, Tymal Mills and Adil Rashid). Ronchi could open the batting and is also expected to keep wickets.
Young leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane from Nepal has also earned his place in the side owing to his impressive performance in the IPL. Shakib al Hasan and Hardik Pandya were initially part of the squad but while the former withdrew himself citing personal reasons, the latter has been ruled out with a viral illness. The team has added leg-spinner Adil Rashid and seam bowler Mohammed Shami in the squad as the respective replacements. Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi is recovering from a knee injury but has made clear that he will be playing despite the injury. Surprisingly, the ICC World XI squad does not feature any South African.
Luke Ronchi will be a key figure with the bat for the ICC World XI. The New Zealand batsman had a brilliant PSL 2018 season where he emerged as the leading run-getter of the tournament and played a major role in helping his side Islamabad United to win the title. Sam Billings is a dangerous batsman in the 20-overs format. He will be familiar with the conditions and his role at the top will become even more important in the absence of Eoin Morgan. Dinesh Karthik was one of the most consistent batsmen in the IPL and he is going to be a vital cog in the middle order.
Rashid Khan is the team's x-factor when it comes to bowling. The Afghan leg-spinner is ranked no. 1 on the ICC T20 rankings and he also finished as the second-best bowler in the IPL. Shahid Afridi has taken the most wickets at the Lord's in T20Is (7 wickets in 3 matches) and he could trouble the West Indian batsmen on this surface. Kiwi pacer Mitchell McClenaghan has an impressive strike rate of 19.67 and an average of 25.27 with the ball in this format.
The ICC World XI have won one and lost two out of the three T20 internationals they have played so far. All three of those games were played against Pakistan in Lahore in September 2017. After losing the first fixture of the three-match series by 20 runs, the World XI bounced back to register a seven-wicket win in the second game. They, however, went down in the final game by 33 runs to lose the series 1-2. They were very impressive with the bat in that series but their bowling was not up to the mark, having conceded over 170 in each of their matches.
Luke Ronchi, Tamim Iqbal, Sam Billings, Shoaib Malik, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Shahid Afridi (c), Thisara Perera, Mitchell McClenaghan, Rashid Khan, Adil Rashid/Mohammed Shami, Sandeep Lamichhane
West Indies are favorites amongst the bookmakers to win this one-off T20 international at odds of 1.72 on Betway and 1.73 on Betfair. They are the most successful team in the shortest format of the game, having won the ICC World T20 tournament twice in their last three attempts. The Windies are the reigning World T20 champions and boast some of the world's fiercest strikers in their side. The ICC World XI too have plenty of quality players on their roster including veterans like Shoaib Malik and Shahid Afridi apart from the in-form players in Luke Ronchi, Dinesh Karthik and Rashid Khan. They, however, begin as the underdogs for this game at odds of 2 on Betway and 2.14 on Betfair.
West Indies have played a T20 international at this ground before; they played India in the 2009 ICC World T20 and recorded a comfortable seven-wicket victory. So that should give them some confidence going into this match. While they do have plenty of depth in their batting and boast some of the world's most fearsome strikers of the cricket ball, their bowling (barring Samuel Badree) does not inspire too much confidence. This means that the Windies could be chasing a big total here or their batsmen will have to put up a formidable score if they happen to bat first.
The ICC World XI appear to be a more balanced side on paper. They may not have power hitters in their side like the West Indies have, but they do have experienced campaigners like Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi and Dinesh Karthik. They also have Rashid Khan who we feel will be very difficult to put away for runs here. West Indies may be the current ICC World T20 champions, but we expect the ICC Rest of the World XI to come out on top in this match.
Final Verdict: Back ICC World XI to beat the West Indies.
