Perth Scorchers Women are favourites to win
Sydney Thunder Women will take on Perth Scorchers Women at the Blacktown ISP Oval. Match 7 of the 2022 WBBL will get underway at 17:00 local time on Sunday, October 16th.
It was a 19 run defeat for Sydney Thunder Women in Match 2 of the tournament as they went down to Hobart Hurricanes Women. After winning the toss, they restricted the Hurricanes Women to 125-5 but then lost nine wickets and could only make 106 from their 20 overs.
Keeper-batter Tahlia Wilson, opener Phoebe Litchfield and Anika Learoyd were the only three players to make double-figure scores against Hobart Hurricanes Women. No player hit a six in the innings with Litchfield and Wilson the only players to hit fours.
At the halfway stage of Match 2, it looked like Sydney Thunder Women’s bowlers had put their team in a strong position. Opening bowler, Samantha Bates, was particularly impressive with figures of 2-16 and two maidens from her four overs. South African Chloe Tryon took 2-14.
Sydney Thunder Women have lost their last two WBBL matches, both against Hobart Hurricanes Women.
The 2021 WBBL Champions get their campaign underway in this match with the many analysts and commentators predicting a second successive title. They beat the in-form Adelaide Strikers Women with a 12 run win in Perth in the final last year.
Beth Mooney was the highest run scorer across the tournament last year with 547 runs although it was New Zealand’s Sophie Devine, the captain of the side, who top scored in the final. South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp is another who is a consistent run scorer.
Spinner Alana King enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last year and we expect her to be a very dangerous bowler in the 2022 WBBL. Alongside her, we expect medium pacer Lilly Mills, who took 16 wickets at an average 12.81 in the 2021 competition, to be a regular wicket taker.
The Scorchers did not lose any of their final seven games in the 2021 WBBL.
The match will be played at the Blacktown ISP Oval, Sydney. It is a slow wicket which offers turn and grip for the spinners and medium pace bowlers.
