Hobart Hurricanes Women are favourites to win
Sydney Thunder Women will take on Hobart Hurricanes Women at the Blacktown ISP Oval, Sydney. Match 2 of the 2022 WBBL will get underway at 15:00 local time on Friday, October 14th.
Thunder were one of two sides to register only four wins across the 2021 WBBL. They finished in seventh place, one point above their city rivals, Sydney Sixers, and only avoided being level on points due to picking up one additional no-result.
India’s Smriti Mandhana was Sydney Thunder Women’s highest run scorer last year after hitting a century and two fifties. However, she is expected to miss this year’s competition after a very busy few months. England Women’s Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones are both strong batters who will enjoy batting on Australian wickets.
20 year old medium pacer Hannah Darlington took an impressive 16 wickets in the 2021 campaign. Although she was more expensive than other bowlers who took a similar amount of wickets, it was still a strong effort in a weak side. Sammy-Jo Johnson had a poor return of 10 dismissals last year but is expected to be back to her best this year.
Sydney Thunder beat Sydney Sixers and Brisbane Heat over their last four matches of last year.
The Hurricanes finished in sixth place last year, above the two Sydney sides but four points and two places away from the playoff places. However, there has been plenty of changes on the field and in the team management and there is an optimistic feel about their chances this year.
A major addition to Hobart Hurricanes’ batting line-up to this year is the signing of Elyse Villani from Melbourne Stars. Villani will captain the Hurricanes in 2022 and comes into the side after hitting 439 runs, including a century, with a strike-rate of 122.28.
Taking wickets was not a strong point for the Hurricanes last year although 30 year old off-spinner Molly Strano took 15 wickets. Strano, alongside young all-rounder Ruth Johnston, will lead the spin attack this year with 17 year old leg-spinner Amy Smith another who is tipped for the top.
Hobart Hurricanes won three of their last five matches last year and will be looking for their third successive WBBL victory in this game.
The match will be played at the Blacktown ISP Oval, Sydney. Expect a fast pitch which will be particularly appealing for the pace bowlers and stroke makers.

Both sides will be looking to improve on their poor returns from the 2021 WBBL and will see this as a winnable opening fixture. Sydney Thunder have good players but we think the signing of Elyse Villani makes Hobart even stronger this year. We are backing the Hurricanes to win this match.
