Pakistan are favorites to win
In what was a relatively dreary first Test Match, thanks to enforced interruptions due to constant rain and cold winds, Pakistan and Sri Lanka could not be separated – the match ending in a tie. That means everything is to play for in this second and final Test Match and both teams will have taken positives from the first Test despite the outcome. There were two centuries for Pakistan, with Abid Ali and Babar Azam hitting 109 and 102 respectively while Dhananjaya de Silva hit 102 for Sri Lanka. The locals turned up in their numbers and were vocal in their backing, they will doubtless be looking for Pakistan to finish the job in the second Test. Sri Lanka will be hoping for repeat performances from Lahiru Kumara and Kasun Rajitha, who both bowled effectively, taking a wicket each.
Pakistan will have taken more positives from the first Test, particularly regarding the way they finished. Prior to the first Test, many would’ve expected Sri Lanka to win, given Pakistan’s poor run of form and Sri Lanka’s positive performance in the first Test against New Zealand, but that certainly wasn’t evident. With a much better weather forecast going into the second Test, if both teams pick up where they left off and with a vocal home support, it will be Pakistan who will be expecting to edge out Sri Lanka.

Abid Ali and Babar Azam both hit centuries and both remained at the crease as the match concluded. Their partnership culminated in 162 runs. Babar Azam’s century was particularly impressive as he scored 102 from 128 deliveries in what was a rousing finish. Abid Ali became the first man to score a century on his debut in both Test and ODI formats. With no injury news, a similar line-up will be expected with the batsmen in particular looking to pick up where they left off.
You can’t look past the best two batsmen from the first Test, Abid Ali and Babar Azam, who will be expected to deliver the same type of aggressive performance again. Pakistan will look to Abbas and Shah to attack the Sri Lankan batsmen but Shaheen is another to look out for, taking 2 wickets against Sri Lanka in the first Test.
Pakistan came into the first Test Match against Sri Lanka in bad form. They lost to Australia twice in their first fixture of the ICC World Test Championship; losing by an innings and 5 runs in the first Test and an innings and 48 runs in the second. However, it looks like they have learned from their losses and made a few tweaks to their line-up. They will take a lot of momentum from the rousing finish their batsmen produced against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s recent results show that their best format is Test Cricket. They will be looking to rectify, what was by their recent standards, a bad performance in the first Test. Perhaps it was the weather, or bad form, or both, but Sri Lanka will be expecting improved performances. They will be without their fast bowler Suranga Lakmal so a lot will be riding on the performance of Lahiru Kumara.
Lahiru Kumara and Kasun Rajitha both bowled excellently in the first Test, taking a wicket each. They will represent the spearhead of Sri Lanka’s bowling threat. Sri Lanka’s best batsman is arguably their captain, Dimuth Karunaratne, from whom they’ll be expecting an improved performance this time around. However, it was Dhananjaya de Silva who hit their solitary century in the first Test, so he’s another to look out for.
Sri Lanka started the ICC World Test Championships very well, beating New Zealand by 6 wickets. They lost the second Test by an innings and 65 runs however and then went on to draw with Pakistan in their first Test of the fixture.
