Otago Sparks are favorites to win
Otago Sparks will take on Canterbury Magicians at the University of Otago Oval, Dunedin. The Elimination Final of the 2022-23 Women’s Super Smash gets underway at 15:10 local time on Thursday February 9th.
The Sparks finished the group stage in second place after beating Canterbury Magicians by four wickets with one ball remaining at this venue on Monday. Otago won six of their 10 matches in the first stage and finished two points above their opponents in this game.
Chasing a total of 167 for victory in Match 30, Otago Sparks got off to a strong start with 23 from 15 balls and 28 from 15 balls from openers Bella James and Olivia Gain. Keeper-batter Polly Inglis continued her strong form with 47 not out to take the team over the line on Monday.
In spite of winning the game, there were only two wickets taken by Otago Sparks’ bowlers with Emma Black and ME Loe dismissing one batter each. Linsey Smith was the most economical and conceded only 26 runs from her four overs.
Otago Sparks have won four successive matches in the tournament and a fifth win in a row will see them reach the final.
The Magicians enjoyed a very strong first six games of the competition but their form has tailed off across the final four matches of the tournament. After losing two games in a row on February 4th and February 6th, both to Otago Sparks, the Magicians need to find a way to defeat the Sparks if they are to reach the final.
With Amy Satterthwaite retired from international cricket and Kate Anderson not selected for New Zealand Women’s T20 World Cup squad, the Magicians still have their top two batters available for this game. The pair scored 144 of Canterbury Magicians’ 166 in Match 30.
The 22 year old leg-spinner Sarah Asmussen was the only Canterbury Magicians bowler to go wicketless in the defeat against Otago Sparks on Monday. Medium pacer Gabby Sullivan will be looking forward to bowling at the Otago batters again after taking 2-22 at this venue in the last meeting.
Canterbury Magicians have lost two of their last three games and look like they may have lost their form at a crucial point.
Canterbury Magicians have been beaten in three of their last four matches in the competition.
