Adelaide Strikers Women are favourites to win
Melbourne Renegades Women will take on Adelaide Strikers Women at the Great Barrier Reef Arena, Mackay. Match 5 of the 2022 WBBL will get underway at 10:15 local time on Sunday, October 16th.
It was a successful group stage for Melbourne Renegades Women during the 2021 WBBL as they won eight of their 14 contests and finished in second place. However, they were knocked out of the playoffs in the Challenger by Adelaide Strikers who beat them by nine wickets.
The bulk of the runs for Melbourne Renegades Women last year came from the Indian pair of Harmanpreet Kaur (406) and Jemimah Rodrigues (333) with England’s Eve Jones also contributing 236. Rodrigues is not playing in the tournament this year and Jones is featuring in the early games before Kaur’s arrival from the Asia Cup.
Kaur was the team’s top wicket taker in 2021 and also took the Player of the Tournament Award. However, in her absence in these opening matches, pace bowler Ellie Falconer, who took 10 wickets last year, will lead the attack for Renegades Women.
Melbourne Renegades Women lost all of their final three games of the 2021 campaign.
The 2021 WBBL Runners-Up began this year’s tournament with a 17 run defeat to Sydney Sixers Women in Mackay on Saturday afternoon. After conceding 151-2 from 20 overs in the field, Adelaide Strikers Women could only produce 134-9 in reply.
Katie Mack, who ended the 2021 competition in fantastic form and scored 513 runs in total, top scored again for Adelaide Strikers Women in Saturday’s defeat to Sydney Sixers Women. She hit 34 runs from 32 balls at the top of the order.
With only two wickets taken across Sydney Sixers Women’s innings on Saturday, there were four Adelaide Strikers Women who did not deliver a dismissal. Opening bowlers, Meghan Schutt and Darcie Brown both picked up a wicket each.
The Strikers Women have now lost successive WBBL matches.
The match will be played at the Great Barrier Reef Arena, Mackay. It is an excellent pitch in Mackay which offers something for all types of bowlers and has enough pace to also please the batters.
