Jaffna Kings are favorites to win
Jaffna Kings will take on Galle Gladiators at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium. Match 1 of the 2022 Lanka Premier League gets underway at 15:00 local time on Tuesday 6th December.
The 2021 LPL Champions not only won the final last year but also finished top of the group stage with an impressive record of six wins and only two defeats. It will be the same opponents from the final which saw Jaffna Kings win by 23 runs.
Jaffna Kings have assembled an excellent team who look likely to have every chance of retaining their trophy. Thisara Perera will captain the side and alongside the likes of Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who comes straight from a very impressive Abu Dhabi T10 campaign, will be the main run-getters.
With a spin attack which will be the envy of many of the other sides, we expect Jaffna Kings to produce a good start to the campaign on a turning track in Hambantota. Maheesh Theekshana and Praveen Jayawickrama will be the key bowlers for the Kings here.
Jaffna Kings won their last two matches in the tournament last year but this is a fresh year and they start again.
It was December 23rd last year when Galle Gladiators went head to head with Jaffna Kings in the final and ended up on the wrong side of a 23 run defeat. The Gladiators will be relishing the opportunity to get early revenge on the Kings in this campaign.
Captain Kusal Mendis finished the 2021 LPL as the leading run scorer of any side in the competition with 327 runs, including two half-centuries, and he will be a key wicket yet again this year. Iftikhar Ahmed will be able to hit the ground running after scoring plenty of runs in Abu Dhabi over the last couple of weeks.
Getting to the final again will be a big achievement for Galle Gladiators who will be without the joint-leading wicket taker in last year’s tournament, England’s Samit Patel. He picked up 16 wickets but the main threat in this game will probably come from the pace of Mohammad Hasnain.
Galle Gladiators lost last year’s final but won their previous three games.
The match will be played at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium. We expect a very dry surface with plenty of spin and grip for the slower bowlers.
