After a thrilling three match ODI series, which was won 3-0 by the visitors, Ireland and New Zealand lock horns again in this first IT20. Ireland have lost to India in this format and New Zealand in ODIs but have been competitive. The Black Caps will be pleased with their results in the ODIs but will want to improve their performances. Read on as we preview this opening fixture of the series. The first IT20 begins at 16:00 local time in Stormont on Monday afternoon.
As in other formats, Ireland have been far too good for the lesser sides but have come unstuck in this format against the stronger teams. However, they will believe that they can get something out of this match.
New Zealand welcome back Daryl Mitchell who has been excellent for them in this format and carries excellent form from the Test series in England. He could well be the difference between a tight win and a comfortable victory.

New Zealand won all three of the tosses in the ODI series. They chose to bowl first in two of the games and we expect both captains to choose to bowl first in this fixture.
The pitch in Belfast is always more conducive to swing and seam bowling as opposed to spin. We expect a high scoring game due to the small boundaries at this venue.

The home side pushed New Zealand all the way in each of the ODIs and we expect them to be very strong in this series also. They very nearly beat India in their last IT20, eventually losing by only four runs and are fortunate to not have any injuries or player unavailability.

Spinner Mitchell Santner will captain the team in this series and he will lead quite an experienced side. Although, like in the ODI series, some of New Zealand’s biggest names are not on show, the Black Caps still have the likes of Martin Guptill and Lockie Ferguson available as well as other form players.
New Zealand have lost their last four games in this format. The losing run began with defeat in the 2021 T20 World Cup Final.

This will be only the second time that Ireland and New Zealand have met in an IT20. New Zealand won the previous meeting, by 83 runs at Trent Bridge, during the 2009 T20 World Cup.
