Sydney Sixers are favorites to win
The Hobart Hurricanes topped the table last time out and, after strengthening their line-up with some great players, will be looking to go one better than their Semi-Final in last year’s tournament. The Sydney Sixers have already played once, beating the Perth Scorchers by 8 wickets so have started well. However, despite bringing in some new players, including Steve Smith, they’re not expected to do as well as the Hurricanes. Without having any recent form to judge them on, it’s difficult to know how the Hobart Hurricanes will perform, but the bookies fancy last year’s semi-finalists to go further than the Sydney Sixers for a reason.

The Hurricanes have seen some turnover, in terms of players, from last year’s Big Bash where they got as far as the Semi-Final. There will be some big losses with departing Johan Botha, Tymal Mills, Tim Paine, Lawrence Neil-Smith. In comes Scott Boland (Stars), David Miller (South Africa), Nathan Ellis.
D’Arcy Short has to be the pick of the Hobart Hurricanes dangermen after his player of the tournament performances at the BigBash 2018/19. He’ll aggressively lead the top order, scoring very quickly, and can also chip in with his share of wickets thanks to his wrist-spin bowling. Ben McDermott and Matthew Wade are also ones to watch. Wade is tipped my many to be top scorer this time around but will miss the start of the tournament due to international duties. Incoming South African David Miller is also worth looking out for. He will add some steel to the Hurricanes middle order, with his tendency to pick up runs quickly, as demonstrated by his strike rate of 129 in the IPL this season.
The Hurricanes haven’t played yet this tournament so there is no recent form to judge them on. If last season’s performances are anything to go by, they could be expected to make it into the knockout stages, though they’ve lost some key players which has been reflected in the bookmakers’ odds for the likelihood of them winning the tournament. They’ve retained last year’s player of the tournament thought which will give them a glimmer of recapturing last tournament’s form.

As with most teams in the Big Bash League 09, the Sydney Sixers have seen a number of changes to their playing line-up. Out go Joe Denly, Peter Nevill, Henry Thornton, Greg West and Ben Manenti and in come Steve Smith, Josh Hazlewood and Jackson Bird. The Sixers will be hoping for a repeat performance from Josh Philippe, who had a man of the match performance in their recent victory over the Perth Scorchers, scoring 81 runs not out.
Steve Smith, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon are all undeniably talented cricketers, but will all miss a number of games due to international commitments. The bulk of the threat carried by the Sydney Sixers is in their bowling. The speed of Dwarshuis and Curran will undoubtedly trouble their opponents and Sean Abbott will look to take a very high number of wickets given that he’s the all-time wicket-taker for the Sydney Sixers. They’ll look to opener Daniel Hughes to attack the ball and carry on his domestic form from earlier this year.
You can’t do better than winning all your games. That’s what the Sydney Sixers have done so far, although they’ve only played once. They’ll hope they can maintain their good performance against a step-up in terms of the quality of their opposition. They will be looking to Josh Philippe to repeat his high-scoring man of the match performance from their previous match.
