The Eagles secured their place in Saturday evening’s final with two sixes from their last three balls to beat the 2022 T20 Blast Champions Hampshire Hawks. It was an excellent team effort with both bat and ball in the semi-final and the Eagles will be looking for their second T20 Blast title after also winning in 2019.
With a revised target of 115 from 12 overs, Essex Eagles got over the finish line with three balls remaining with the biggest contributions coming from Dan Lawrence (21 runs from 16 balls), Matt Critchley (26 not out from 14 balls) and Daniel Sams (29 runs from 17 balls).
25 year old right arm fast medium bowler Aaron Beard was the only Essex Eagles bowler not to take a wicket in the semi-final. All of the other six bowlers used picked up at least one wicket with Matt Critchley returning figures of 2-44 from his 4 overs.
Essex Eagles found themselves on a terrible run just before the end of the group stage but come into this final with three successive wins behind them.
Adam Rossington (wk), Daniel Lawrence, Michael-Kyle Pepper, Robin Das, Paul Walter, Matthew Critchley, Daniel Sams, Simon Harmer (c), Shane Snater, Aaron Beard, Sam Cook
The South Group winners have been the most impressive team in T20 Blast 2023. Although they didn’t win the 2022 tournament, Somerset are an excellent all-format side. This will be their fifth appearance in a T20 Blast final and have won only one.
Somerset have a very attacking top three batting line up with Tom Banton and Will Smeed at the top of the order and Tom Kohler-Cadmore at number three. Irrespective of the format, Somerset have a deep batting line-up with plenty of all-rounders in their team.
Captain Lewis Gregory, the experienced New Zealander Matt Henry and Craig Overton make up a very strong bowling trio but it has been Ben Green who has been the most impressive this year. He is the leading wicket taker across all teams in this competition.
Somerset have lost only two games all campaign and are looking for their seventh successive victory in this year's T20 Blast.
Tom Banton (wk), Will Smeed, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Tom Abell, Sean Dickson, Lewis Gregory (c), Ben Green, Craig Overton, Matt Henry, Ish Sodhi, Shoaib Bashir
This looks set to be a brilliant final to close off the tournament on Saturday evening between Essex Eagles and Somerset. Both teams come into this match after winning games earlier in the day and we are expecting a close contest. Our prediction is for Essex Eagles to have the edge with bat and ball and to win this final.
