Hazratullah Zazai and Sunil Narine made an explosive start to the new Bangladesh Premier League season with a 116-run opening partnership from 10.4 overs. They will kick off the innings against Khulna Titans too, while Shuvagata Hom could be promoted up the order after his 38 from 14 balls in the final few overs. By his standards, Shakib Al Hasan – who took eight wickets in two games at Dhaka for Bangladesh against West Indies before Christmas – had a quiet opening game. He took a tidy 1-11 from his two overs but remains a big threat with the ball and the bat.
Hazratullah Zazai stole the show instead – backing up the form he showed in the Afghanistan Premier League by scoring 78 from 41 balls at the top of the order. Sunil Narine weighed in with 38 from 28 balls in an opening stand of 116 from 10.4 overs which set the tone for a big win.
West Indian all-rounders Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell were the other overseas players selected – both chipping in with a wicket apiece – but it was experienced local Shuvagata Hom who looked particularly impressive. He smashed an unbeaten 38 from 14 balls before taking 1-16 from 3.2 overs. Rubel Hossain was the stand-out bowler, however – he claimed 3-7 from his three overs, including opening batsman Mohammad Hafeez and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

With Lasith Malinga currently away with Sri Lanka, Paul Stirling, Carlos Brathwaite, Ali Khan and Zahir Khan formed the Titans’ overseas contingent for their opening game against Rangpur Riders. Runs in the middle order were the issue – both in terms of those conceded with the bat and those scored with the ball – and the Titans may tweak the line-up to combat that.

Khulna Titans’ opening batsmen impressed despite the defeat to Rangpur Riders. Paul Stirling, fresh from some big scores in the T10 League, top-scored with 61 at the top of the order as the Irishman continues to find success in franchise cricket. Junaid Siddique, who has been in goodform in the first class game, provided a useful foil for the Irishman in a partnership of 90 from 11.1 overs.
The issue for the Titans was in the middle order, where they failed to continue that momentum. Captain Mahmudullah hit 24 from 17 balls to continue the all-round form he showed against West Indies, however – though Carlos Brathwaite arrived too late to make a telling impact at the crease and was unusually expensive with the ball.
Ali Khan had earlier got them off to a great start, taking a wicket maiden, but the Riders hit back and the American opener eventually finished with 1-35 from four overs.
