Tamim Iqbal hit three half-centuries in the longer one-day games during that leg of West Indies’ tour of Bangladesh and played his way back into form with a patient 35 from 34 balls last time out.
He is partnering Evin Lewis at the top of the order – fresh from his 89 from 36 balls in the decisive final T20 against Bangladesh before Christmas – and both men could form one of the key partnerships of this tournament if they fire.
In the middle order, captain Steve Smith’s arrival dominated the headlines but Shoaib Malik boats plenty of experience and was in good all-round form in the National T20 Cup in Pakistan before Christmas. Countryman Shahid Afridi was the star of the opening game, meanwhile, accelerating the innings perfectly with an unbeaten 39 from 25 balls to lead the Victorians to victory.
Afridi had earlier claimed a wicket too, while Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Shahid and Mohammad Saifuddin all claimed two apiece. Saifuddin took 16 wickets in 13 games for Comilla Victorians in last year’s tournament too.

With Chris Gayle’s NOC delayed – though it is due to be granted by the West Indies Cricket Board – Rangpur Riders were unchanged from their opening defeat for their second game. If Gayle is cleared to play, it could be England’s Alex Hales who makes way given Rilee Rossouw, Ravi Bopara and Benny Howell have all impressed so far. Alternatively, Nadif Chowdhury is a spin-bowling option to replace Howell, if the Riders want to keep Hales at the top of the order. There will be more selection headaches to come too, with AB de Villiers yet to join up with the squad for his BPL stint.

A selection dilemma of Chris Gayle – the star of last year’s play-offs, who scored 146 not out from 69 balls in the final, and top scored with 485 from 11 innings in total – or Alex Hales, England’s explosive opening batsman, is a nice one to have too. One or both will feature in this game, with Gayle awaiting his NOC from the WICB.
aptain Mashrafe Mortaza has taken three wickets in the first two games of BPL 2019, meanwhile, while Benny Howell has kept things tidy with 1-13 and 1-19 in the two games so far – making it difficult for the selectors to drop him to accommodate Gayle’s return.
