Brisbane Heat Women are favourites to win
Brisbane Heat Women will take on Sydney Sixers Women at the Great Barrier Reef Arena, Mackay. Match 1 of the 2022 WBBL will get underway at 19:40 local time on Thursday, October 13th.
With eight wins from 14 group stage games, Brisbane Heat finished in third place in the WBBL table last year. They proceeded to the playoffs but were knocked out in the Eliminator by Adelaide Strikers who went all the way to the final.
Brisbane Heat were impressive during the last campaign and have made some strong new additions with the bat. England’s Danni Wyatt, who impressed in a recent series against India, has joined and we expect New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr to also be one of their top run scorers.
Captain Jess Jonassen took 21 wickets at an average of 14.90 in the 2021-22 competition with only Adelaide Strikers’ Amanada Wellington getting more dismissals. Off-spinning all-rounder Grace Harris will also be a threat on spinning wickets.
Brisbane Heat had a very strong middle part of last year’s WBBL but lost three of their last four games.
It was a very disappointing WBBL campaign for Sydney Sixers Women last year. They won only four matches, lost nine games and finished bottom of the table with only nine points. They were six points behind fourth placed Adelaide Strikers and a place in the playoffs.
Elyse Perry will captain the side again this year and she was one of a few positives from the 2021-22 competition. The all-rounder hit 358 runs at an average of 35.80 although she will look to improve on her strike-rate of 91.32. With more runs around her, expect her to play in a more attacking manner.
Lauren Cheatle was the top wicket taker for Sydney Sixers Women in the last campaign but she only took 10 wickets from eight games. England spinner Sophie Ecclestone has had a very strong year across all formats and will be a threat on all surfaces.
Sydney SIxers lost only two of their last five matches and will look to bring that form into this year’s tournament.
The match will be played at the Great Barrier Reef Arena, Mackay. There will be something in the pitch for the seam bowlers and hitting sixes will be hard work for the batters.

This should be an excellent game to get the eighth edition of the WBBL underway. Brisbane Heat have recruited well and were a strong side last year and Sydney Sixers will be looking to put on a much better show than in 2021. We are backing Brisbane Heat to win this opener
