Bangladesh Women are favorites to win
Bangladesh Women will take on Thailand Women at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium Ground 2. Match 1 in the Round-robin stage of the 2022 Women’s Asia Cup gets underway on Saturday 1st October.
Nigar Sultana’s side come into the tournament as the reigning champions after they beat India Women by three wickets in the June 2018 final in Kuala Lumpur. More recently, they won the Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier in Abu Dhabi earlier this month.
Captain Nigar Sultana is the key wicket in the Bangladesh Women XI and she was in excellent form during the World Cup Qualifier tournament. She ended the competition as the Player of the Series and top scored for her side in both of their opening games.
31 year old leg-spinner Rumana Ahmed starred in the final of the World Cup Qualifier, taking 3-24 and the Player of the Match award against Ireland Women. All-rounder Salma Khatun took 3-18 in the semi-final victory against Thailand Women.
After an excellent week in Abu Dhabi where they won all five matches, Bangladesh Women come into this competition in excellent form.
Naruemol Chaiwai’s team will be looking to improve on their fifth place finish from the 2018 Women’s Asia Cup when they won two matches from five. Their victories came against Malaysia Women (nine wickets) and Sri Lanka Women (four wickets).
26 year old Natthakan Chantam was the standout batter for Thailand Women during the World Cup Qualifier campaign in Abu Dhabi. She hit 99 runs from the last two games including 64 runs from 51 balls in the semi-final against Bangladesh Women.
Off-spinning all-rounder Nattaya Boochatham produced two brilliant bowling performances in Abu Dhabi earlier this month. She took 2-17 from her four overs against UAE Women before starring against Papua New Guinea Women with 4-8.
Thailand Women won two of their five matches in Abu Dhabi but come into this tournament on the back of successive defeats against Bangladesh Women and Zimbabwe Women.
The match will be played at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium Ground 2. We expect to see a slow wicket with low bounce throughout this game. A par score will be no higher than 130-140.
