South Africa will be looking for a winning start to their campaign. The team will be high on confidence after beating Australia 3-2 in the ODI series at home ahead of the World Cup. The Proteas lost the first two ODIs but bounced back to win the series.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka will be a force in the World Cup. The team is well used to the conditions and have good spinners who can help them win the tournament. The loss of Wanindu Hasaranga and a few other key players is still a big blow but the team will back themselves to do well with whatever resources they have. Sri Lanka did not have a great outing in the World Cup warm-ups where they lost to Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
Let’s take a look at the dream11 team prediction for this match.
The surface at the Arun Jaitley stadium will be batting friendly. It is a small ground so plenty of runs can be expected in the match. The spinners get help from the surface due to variable bounce, however, there will be very little on offer for the pacers.
It will be a hot day in Delhi with temperature hovering around high 20s. There is no threat of rain and bowling in sun will be a challenge. Captains might look to bat first to help their bowlers escape scorching heat.
Quinton de Kock, Temba Bavuma ©, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Lungi Ngidi
Kusal-Mendis, Kusal Perera, Pathum Nissanka, Charith Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka, Chamika Karunaratne, Dunith Wellalage, Dhananjaya de Silva, Kasun Rajitha, Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana
Sri Lanka have lost key players like Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera due to injury. However, all their players who made it to the World Cup squad are fit. South Africa too don’t have any injury concerns and have all players fit and available.
South Africa have clearly dominated Sri Lanka in ODIs, however, Sri Lanka have a better record when it comes to playing in subcontinent conditions, with most of their 33 wins coming here.

Klassen has been in great form in the last year or so. He has consistently scored runs in whatever format he plays. In the ODI series against Australia, he played an innings of 174 in 83 balls.
Despite being inconsistent in recent times, De Kock remains a key player for South Africa. He has plenty of experience playing in India and is good against pacers as well as spinners. De Kock scored a fifty in the warm-up game and will be looking for a blazing start to World Cup campaign.
Shamsi is a great T20 bowler but he is yet to make a mark in ODIs. However, given the conditions, spinners are likely to be the match-winners for teams and Shamsi can have a really great tournament for South Africa,
He is a very important player in the Sri Lanka team. He is a quality batter and more than a handy spinner. De Silva bats at a crucial position. If the team gets a good start, he plays the role of a finisher, however, if the team loses early wickets, he can drop anchor and build an innings. He is a wicket-taking option too.
In the absence of Wanindu Hasaranga, Theekshana becomes key for Sri Lanka. He is the team’s lead spinner and a lot of Sri Lanka’s hopes of winning the World Cup rest on him.
