Birmingham Phoenix started the tournament with a loss against Trent Rockets. While they didn’t play bad cricket, the Rockets were better than them on the day. The team posted a healthy score of 143-7 in 100 balls, courtesy of fine knocks by Moeen Ali, and Liam Livingstone. However, the bowlers failed to defend the target as they lost the match by six wickets.
Meanwhile, Southern Brave picked up a comprehensive win over Welsh Fire. Having restricted Fire to a mere 107-7, Brave chased the target with 9 wickets to spare in just 70 balls, with James Vince scoring 71. Both teams featured in the final of the last season and should come together to deliver a cracking game.
We are not expecting too much help for the bowlers from the surface. The pitch will be flat and tailormade for strokeplay. Bowlers need to deceive batter with their variations.
It will be a clear day in Birmingham with a clear sky. The humidity will be 34 per cent and the temperature will range between 13 to 30 degrees. During the evening, the temperature will be on the early side of the 20s.
Will Smeed, Miles Hammond, Moeen Ali (c), Liam Livingstone, Chris Benjamin (wk), Dan Mousley, Benny Howell, Graeme van Buuren, Tom Helm, Kane Richardson, Imran Tahir
James Vince (c), Alex Davies (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Ross Whiteley, James Fuller, Chris Jordan, Craig Overton, Jake Lintott, Rehan Ahmed, Michael Hogan
We don’t expect the teams to make changes to their combination just after one game. Both are likely to field the same XI. Quinton de Kock might be available for Brave as he is done with national duties but we have no clear update on the same.
The two teams have met twice so far, including the final of the last season and Brave won the match on both occasions.

All-rounders | Marcus Stoinis, Benny Howell, Moeen Ali |
Bowlers | Chris Jordan, Craig Overton, Tom Helm, Imran Tahir |
James Vince was at his very best against Welsh Fire and scored a brilliant 71 off 41 balls to take his team home. Vince is a top batter for England, and he is eyeing a spot back in the England team. He will be keen to have another good game.
Stoinis is a very good player to have in the team. He can win you matches with the bat and also with the ball. He will be batting at 3 thus will get enough balls to face. If he plays 30-40 balls, he can do some serious damage.
The England all-rounder can be brutal on his day. He had a good start to the tournament and scored 47 off 28 balls including 5 sixes in the opening game. Livingstone likes to play aggressively and this format allows his to play without any pressure. He too is a key player.
Another match winner we need to have in the team. Moeen had a good outing with the bat against Rockets and scored 35 runs off 21 balls. He also bowled 15 balls for just 22 runs and picked up a wicket. What else one can demand?
Tom Helm picked two wickets for 11 runs in the last game and will be looking to replicate his performance in the coming game as well.
