After an enthralling season of the T20 World Cup, the focus now shifts to the 50-over World Cup next year in India. England and Australia will get into the ODI mode when they face off in a three-match ODI series.
England played India and South Africa in the ODI series a few months back but failed to win the series. They lost to India 2-1, while the series against South Africa was tied 1-1.
Meanwhile, Australia hosted New Zealand in the ODI series in September and won the series 3-0.
Adelaide is one of the best batting surfaces in Australia. The new ball will swing for the first 4-5 overs but it will become flat once the ball gets a bit soft. Spinners might get some help as well.
The weather looks pleasant for the day as there is no threat of rain. Also, the temperature will be around 22 degrees which makes up for a terrific day for cricket.
David Warner, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Cameron Green, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey (WK), Pat Cummins (C), Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa
Jason Roy, James Vince, Phillip Salt, Sam Billings, Jos Buttler (C&WK), Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Chris Jordan, Olly Stone
Both teams have added a few ODI specialists to the squad. England have recalled James Vince and Sam Billings while the likes of Ben Stokes and Mark Wood have been rested. Australia have recalled Travis Head but Glenn Maxwell will miss the series after fracturing his leg.
Australia have a big lead over England in ODIs, however, England have evolved as a dangerous ODI team and have dominated Australia in recent times.
Matches Played | ENG | AUS | NR | Tie | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Overall | 152 | 63 | 84 | 3 | 2 |
Wicketkeeper | Jos Buttler, Alex Carey |

Batters | David Warner (C), Jason Roy, Steve Smith |
All-rounders | Cameron Green, Moeen Ali (VC), Sam Curran |
Bowlers | Chris Woakes, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins |
Jos Buttler has been in staggering form of late. Even though he has played a lot of T20I cricket in recent times, he is equally dangerous in the 50-over format. In the absence of Ben Stokes, Buttler will be key for England.
David Warner is also one of the best players in this format of the game. Warner too hasn’t played a lot of ODI cricket of late but with the 50-over World Cup not far away, Warner will be looking to get into the zone as soon as possible. Also, having played England in the T20I series and T20 World Cup recently, Warner has had a good look at England’s bowlers so there are high chances that he will come good in the match.
Moeen Ali will be a key player for England. His 10 overs of spin on Adelaide Oval will be very crucial for England, while he is also one of their top batters so Ali has to play a big role if England have to beat Australia in the coming game.
Pat Cummins didn’t have a great T20 World Cup but he will be Australia’s leading bowler in the ODIs. His pace and accuracy will cause plenty of trouble to the England batting, who has struggled off late.
Hazlewood is also a bowler who can run through England’s batting. If there is any help on offer from the surface, Hazlewood will make full use of that. He is a bowler who can easily take 3-4 wickets in his first spell with the new ball.
