About Delhi Capitals Team (DC)

Delhi Capitals have participated in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since its inaugural season in 2008. However, it took them 13 seasons to get to their first-ever IPL final. In the IPL 2020, they lost to Mumbai Indians in the final and finished as runners-up which is their top performance so far in 16 years.

The Delhi Capitals underwent a revamp prior to the 2019 season, while they were still known as the Delhi Daredevils. Their performance improved after the revamp, and since the 2020 season, the Delhi squad has been quite competitive.

Delhi Capitals is jointly owned by the GMR Group and JSW Sport. Both companies are among the largest multinational conglomerates of India. Seeing Rishabh Pant’s consistency with the bat, the team management appointed him as the captain for the 2021 season and then he got the full-time captaincy when Shreyas Iyer was released.

In December 2022, Rishabh Pant met with a car accident which he narrowly survived. He missed the last season and in his absence, Aussie batter David Warner led the team and DC finished at the 9th position on the table with just 5 wins in 14 matches.

We are expecting Rishabh Pant as a full-time skipper this season. He will be batting in the middle-order but might not be able to keep the wickets for a long time.

Ahead of the IPL auction in December 2023, DC released a bunch of hitters like Rilee Rossouw, Phil Salt, Rovman Powell, Manish Pandey and Sarfaraz Khan. We are not sure about their plans as the squad does not look so strong in the batting line-up even after their purchases in the auction.

In a big blow to the DC team, England batter Harry Brook has pulled out of the IPL 2024 citing personal reasons and South African pacer Lungi Ngidi has picked up an injury due to which he will be out for the initial matches and doubtful for the rest of the season.

Delhi Capitals have never won an IPL trophy despite having some of the top T20 players by their side. DC’s interim captain for 2023, David Warner has won an IPL trophy for SRH in 2016 but his captaincy skills did not work for DC last year.

We feel that they should have gone with David Warner as captain for another season as Rishabh Pant might need some time to settle himself back at such a competitive level. He will be suddenly pressurised with all the captaincy duties which can take a toll on his performance as well.

Keeping the captaincy aside, we also feel that Delhi Capitals squad lacks a good batting line-up and that is going to hit them hard this season.

Can DC Win IPL 2024?

As mentioned above, we are sceptical about DC’s batting line-up. If power-hitters like Warner, Marsh get in good form and get the required support from Harry Brook, Rishabh Pant then this team can try to build big scores which their bowling unit can defend.

According to our analysis, we are not putting DC among the top teams for the IPL 2024 season.
