Who Will Win Western Storm vs Lancashire Thunder, WCSL 2019?

Lancashire Thunder travel to Taunton to face Western Storm, still looking for their first win of the 2019 Women’s Cricket Super League campaign. The match at the County Ground takes place on August 10 and the live action is scheduled to start at 15:00.

Thunder, who have never reached the play-offs, have lost two from two so far – Harmanpreet Kaur’s unbeaten half-century a lone stand in another below-par batting performance against Surrey Stars last time out.

They face a Western Storm looking to top the group after finishing second and then losing in the play-off last season. The Storm, led by England captain Heather Knight, impressed with bat and ball as they beat Loughborough Lightning in their opening game.

WS vs LT Toss Prediction

Lancashire Thunder are yet to win the toss, with this their third game. Kate Cross’ luck is due to change and, on a batting wicket, they may want to set a score and put their recent batting woes behind them.

WS vs LT Weather Report

Overnight rain could mean a wet outfield, but the forecast for Saturday is much better – partly cloudy and a little windy, but crucially dry.

WS vs LT Pitch Condition

This is Western Storm’s first home game of the 2019 Kia Super League and it will also have been a week since Somerset last used the ground. This match is part of a double header, but the women get first crack at what should be another excellent batting surface.

Western Storm Team News & Playing 11

WS Team News

Anya Shrubsole did not feature in Western Storm’s opening match and the England pace bowler may find it difficult to reclaim her place despite her reputation. A strong all-round display included a wicket on her debut for newcomer Alex Griffiths.

WS Key Players

Smriti Mandhana: In pre-tournament interviews, the Indian icon said she was delighted with how she was timing the ball and she gave a little taste with 32 from 24 balls in the opening game.

Deepti Sharma: One of the new recruits for this season, the Indian off-spinner took 1-17 – including ten dot balls – to show what she can add to the bowling attack this season.

Heather Knight: The England and Western Storm captain went wicketless with the ball but then anchored the chase with a disciplined 41 from 39 balls to guide the Storm towards victory.

WS Team Form

After losing to Surrey Stars in last year’s play-off, following their second-placed finish, Western Storm kicked off the new campaign in winning form. Freya Davies and Claire Nicholas both claimed two wickets and Deepti Sharma bowled economically as they limited Loughborough Lightning to 125/6. In reply, Smriti Mandhana (32), Heather Knight (41) and Fran Wilson (33*) guided the Storm to a seven-wicket win in 17 overs.

WS vs LT Dream11 Team Prediction, Captain, Vice Captain

Wicket-keeper

Rachael Priest will open up for the Storm and looks a better option than Eleanor Threlkeld for this game. Threlkeld, like most of her Thunder team-mates, is yet to get going with the bat.

Batsman

The two Indian internationals on display cost a lot of credits, but they are the stand-out batsmen in this game. Smriti Mandhana scored a century against the Thunder last season and looked fluid in her first match of this year, while Harmanpreet Kaur scored a half-century last time out. Also bolstering the Storm’s top order, and in good batting form in the first game, are England duo Heather Knight and Fran Wilson.

All-rounders

Deepti Sharma is another must-buy Indian international for this fixture, though again she comes at a cost. For the Thunder, Sune Luus and Thalia McGrath are yet to show their best form so Emma Lamb – who is good value at 8.5 credits – might be a better pick.

Bowlers

That leaves 34 credits for the bowlers and a requirement to pick at least two from Lancashire. One of the two to pick is fairly easy – Sophie Ecclestone being their leading spin bowler. Kate Cross and Alex Hartley are both 8.5 credits, and Hartley has outscored the captain in the Dream 11 platform so far. Cross could hit back in this game, however. For the Western Storm, both Claire Nicholas and Freya Davies bowled well in the opening game and are good value at eight credits apiece.

Captain/vice-captain

Heather Knight top-scored for the Storm in the first game and, though listed as a batsman, she will bowl too so is a good all-round choice. With lots of potential for points scoring, she is a good captain option. For vice-captain, the two Indian batsmen have showed good form already – Harmanpreet Kaur for Lancashire and Smriti Mandhana for the Storm. With the Storm favourites to win, the latter may be the better pick.

Lancashire Thunder Team News & Playing 11

LT Team News

Lancashire Thunder have been unchanged in their two matches so far, with new addition Sophia Dunkley batting in the higher middle order in order to accommodate the flood of spinners at the Thunder’s service. Natalie Brown and teenager Danielle Collins are among their batting options as they look to end their search for a first win, however.

LT Key Players

Harmanpreet Kaur: The Indian international star scored an unbeaten 58 from 47 balls last time out, hitting six fours and three sixes, to show that she is in batting form – even if her team-mates are not at this stage.

Kate Cross: Expensive with the ball so far, but the England seamer and new Thunder captain has showed her qualities on the international stage.

Sophie Ecclestone: The England spinner – one of the few English players to impress in the Ashes – has bowled 24 dot balls across the opening two games. She claimed 1-12 from her four overs in the first match.

LT Team Form

Lancashire Thunder have never reached the Kia Super League play-offs and they have made a losing start to this season’s competition too. Chasing 166/7 against Southern Vipers in their first game, they were all out for 132 in the final over. Then, next up, Harmanpreet Kaur’s unbeaten 58 was the sole highlight in a score of 120/7 against Surrey Stars. The defending champions needed just 14.2 overs to wrap up an eight-wicket win.
