Wellington Blaze are favorites to win
Wellington Blaze Women will take on Otago Sparks at the Cello Basin Reserve. Match 2 of the 2022-23 Women’s Super Smash gets underway at 11:00 local time on Saturday 24th December.
With seven title winning seasons, the most successful of any team in the history of the tournament, Wellington Blaze come into this competition after lifting the trophy again in the 2021-22 season. Blaze won every game during the campaign last year.
Amelia Kerr was one of the leading batters in last season’s Super Smash and she will be looking to add to her four half-centuries from the 2021-22 campaign. Expect Maddy Green to chip in with valuable runs after improving her batting over the course of the last 12 months.
All of the top three wicket takers across the entire competition of last year were Wellington Blaze Women players with off-spinner Leigh Kasperek topping the list with 20 dismissals. However, we expect medium pacer Jess Kerr to be particularly tough to face on this pitch.
Wellington Blaze have won their last 12 games in the Super Smash, a run which takes them back to the 2020-21 season.
The Sparks put in a strong performance across the 2021-22 Super Smash campaign but came up short in both the group stage and in the final against Wellington Blaze. They lost the final by 75 runs and will want to put in a stronger display in this match.
Otago Sparks will look to experienced international all-rounder Suzie Bates, who has been in excellent form across all formats and at all venues, for the majority of their runs in this match. Alongside Bates, Katey Martin is another reliable source of runs in this team.
21 year old off-spinner Eden Carson took 17 wickets across the 2021-22 Super Smash season and it was notable that she was able to pick up dismissals across all venues. She will be a dangerous bowler for Wellington’s batters and Emma Black, who took 2-36 in last year’s final, will also be accurate.
Otago Sparks won three games in a row before their defeat in last season’s final.
The match will be played at the Cello Basin Reserve. There will be plenty of pace for the bowlers to work with on this surface and we expect a par score of around 140.

Jessica McFadyen, Antonia Hamilton, Rebecca Burns, Thamsyn Newton, Kate Chandler, Sophie Devine, Amelia Kerr, Leigh Kasperek, Olivia Boivin, Jess Kerr, Maneka Singh
Polly Inglis, Sophie Gray, Jordan Meltzer, Suzie Bates, Saffron Wilson, Paige Loggenberg, Caitlin Blakely, Gemma Adams, Sophie Oldershaw, Molly Loe, Chloe Deerness
Although they are facing the runners-up from the last campaign, it would be a huge surprise if Wellington Blaze did not begin this season with a victory. Suzie Bates is the main hurdle to overcome for Blaze but, even if she makes a big score, there is more than enough talent across Wellington’s team. Our prediction is for a victory for Wellington Blaze.
