UAE Women are favorites to win
UAE Women will take on Malaysia Women at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium Ground 2. Match 9 in the Round-robin stage of the 2022 Women’s Asia Cup gets underway on Wednesday 5th October at 13:30 local time.
It has been a tough start to the tournament for UAE Women who followed up their 11 run (DLS) defeat to Sri Lanka Women with a 104 run defeat to India Women on Tuesday afternoon. Although this is their first Women’s Asia Cup, they will fancy their chances of getting a win in this match.
The target of 179 runs against India Women was always going to be out of reach for UAE Women but Kavisha Egodage and Khushi Sharma were able to get some valuable time at the crease. Egodage hit 30 not out from 54 balls with Sharma dismissed for 30 runs from 54 balls.
36 year old medium pacer Chaya Mughal got a wicket in the first over of India Women’s innings when she had Richa Ghosh caught by Priyanjali Jain at backward square-leg. There was also a wicket each for Manika Gaur, Esha Oza and Suraksha Kotte on Tuesday.
UAE Women have won only one of their last four games in this format, a five wicket victory over USA Women in late September.
After defeats to Pakistan Women by nine wickets and to India by 30 runs (DLS), Malaysia Women find themselves at the bottom of the table. It could be argued that they have played their two hardest games already and this game marks the start of a winnable group of fixtures.
Elsa Hunter has impressed with the bat for Malaysia Women and has finished unbeaten in both games against Pakistan Women and India Women. In fact, she registered scores of 53 not out and 42 not out in the two innings before the Women’s Asia Cup and has scored 125 runs without being dismissed.
22 year old off-spinner Mahirah Izzati Ismail took the only wicket in the defeat against Pakistan Women but could not get a breakthrough during her four overs against India Women. However, she will be happy with her economy rate of 5.25. There were two wickets each for skipper Winifred Duraisingam and Nur Daina Syuhada.
Although they have lost their last two games, Malaysia Women have won three of their last five WT20Is.
The match will be played at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium Ground 2. From Match 1 in this tournament it has been the spin bowlers who have got the most assistance from this pitch.
