South Africa U-19s are favourites to win
Tuskers will take on South Africa U-19s at Buffalo Park, East London. Match 3 in Pool A of the CSA Provincial T20 Cup 2022/23 begins at 09:30 local time on Saturday 1st October.
There will be plenty of confidence around the Tuskers squad ahead of this game after they beat Mpumalanga Rhinos by seven wickets and 24 balls remaining on Friday. Apart from one partnership from the Rhinos, the Tuskers were on top throughout the match.
Andile Mogakane and Malcolm Nofal produced very similar scores with the bat in the win over the Rhinos. Although Nofal was dismissed for 52 runs from 31 balls, Mogakane finished unbeaten on 52 not out from 32 balls with an innings which included seven boundaries.
The Tuskers took six Rhinos wickets in their opening game and made sure that the captain and management got a look at all of their bowling options. Nine bowlers were used but it was Keith Dudgeon and Stefan Tait who were the most impressive and took two wickets each.
Friday’s victory ended a run of successive defeats for the Tuskers. However, they did win their first game last year and will be wary that the job is not done yet.
The youngsters of the competition got off to a winning start by defeating Eastern Storm by five wickets with four overs remaining at the City Oval on Friday morning. They restricted Eastern Storm to 142-5 and got home with plenty of balls to spare with each of the top three batters making scores of 30+.
Matthew Boast top scored for South Africa U-19s after hitting 39 from 20 balls against Eastern Storm. He hit four fours and two sixes and had a strike-rate of 195.00 when he was dismissed at the start of the 15th over. The team will be looking for one of their batters to produce a half-century in this clash.
Liam Alder and Matthew Boast caught the eye with the ball for South Africa U-19s. Both bowlers took two wickets with Kwena Maphaka chipping in with 1-24 from his four overs. Although the U-19s took only five wickets, they bowled with excellent control.
After a strong World Cup earlier this year, the U-19s looked very strong in their opening game and will fear none of their more senior opposition.
The match will be played at the City Oval, Pietermaritzburg. Both games on Friday were won by the teams batting second with the pitch getting quicker as the games progressed.
