Usman Khawaja and Pat Cummins continue in the Australian test squad, with neither having featured so far this season. With Jos Buttler and Joe Root leaving to join the England squad, the Thunder have turned to Anton Devcich and Chris Jordan as their overseas players and both have made strong starts. Their main selection decision for this game of Big Bash League 2018/19 will be whether to retain Jonathan Cook, who bowled a maiden in his only over last time out or recall Jason Sangha, who is back from Australia A duty. It is likely to be the latter.
When Jos Buttler departed for England duty, captain Shane Watson seems to have taken that as his cue to shine. He scored 68 in the win against Adelaide Strikers and followed that up with a century from 62 balls in the game against Brisbane Heat.
Anton Devcich has slotted straight in at the top of the order alongside him, and he has scored 21 and 26 in his two innings so far in two useful opening stands. He was previously in good form with the ball for the Northern Knights in the Super Smash in New Zealand.
Chris Jordan was also playing for the Northern Knights before heading to Sydney, but he claimed 1-23 in his first Thunder appearance and then took a wicket in his only over before the power went out last time.
Daniel Sams is their leading wicket taker, meanwhile, with 11 to his name so far. He claimed 1-8 against Adelaide Strikers, from ten balls, but the stand-out performance belonged to Arjun Nair, who took 3-12 from three overs.
Sydney Thunder have combatted the loss of Jos Buttler with two strong performances since his departure – having lost their last two of the big-hitting English batsman’s stint Down Under.
Buttler (and England test captain Joe Root)’s final game was against Brisbane Heat, when the Thunder conceded 186/8 and were 34/2 from 5.3 overs – well short of the DLS target – when rain curtailed their innings.
They bounced back well, however, stuffing Adelaide Strikers at the Spotless Stadium. Shane Watson scored 68 from 40 balls in a total of 168/6, and Arjun Nair led the bowling with 3-12 from three overs as the Strikers were dismissed for 97 in 17.4 overs.
Sydney Thunder were well set in the reverse fixture against Brisbane Heat too, at the Gabba, after Shane Watson’s 100 from 62 balls. They had the heat 10/2 from three overs in reply, with the Bash Brothers both back in the hutch, but a power failure in Brisbane meant the innings was curtailed too early for a result to stand and the Thunder were denied.

Aaron Finch has been dropped from the Australian test squad, which is fantastic news for Melbourne Renegades, who get to welcome their star player back as a result. Marcus Harris makes way to link up with the test squad, however, meaning Finch will likely partner Matthew Harvey at the top of the order.
Aaron Finch has a point to prove after a poor run of form against India in both the tests and ODIs for Australia. Dropped from the test squad, he now has a chance to power the Renegades’ play-off bid. He has scored 42 and 14 in his two Big Bash innings so far this season but his power is undoubted – this is a man with 52 T20 half-centuries and six hundreds to his name after all.
The Renegades need a batting boost too, with Sam Harper still their top scorer on 220 from ten innings including an unbeaten 56 in the win against Brisbane Heat – the only Gades batsman to score a half-century so far.
There have been plenty of highlights with the ball, however. Kane Richardson’s 2-17 against Melbourne Stars last time out takes him to 16 wickets for the tournament – eight of which have come in his last three games.
Mohammad Nabi took 1-9 from two overs last time out, meanwhile, and 4-25 in the win against Sydney Sixers. The Afghani all-rounder contributes middle-order runs – and a high score of 48* against Adelaide Strikers in this year’s tournament – as well as wickets with his off-spin.
Melbourne Renegades’ derby defeat was their second in their last five games. They claimed back-to-back wins at the start of that resurgent run, with Aaron Finch top-scoring with 42 in his first Big Bash appearance this season to help them to a six-wicket win against Hobart Hurricanes.
They followed that up with an eight-wicket defeat of Brisbane Heat in just 15.4 overs, replying to 144/8, as Sam Harper hit a half-century but the Heat gained revenge in the next game – bowling the Renegades out for 91 in reply to 192/4.Melbourne Renegades bounced back by beating Sydney Sixers, restricting them to 115/9 thanks in no small part to Mohammad Nabi’s 4-25 from four overs, on their way to a seven-wicket win.
But they could not back it up, dismissed for just 121 in the Melbourne Derby. The Stars were dragged to the 20th over in reply, with Kane Richardson claiming 2-17, but they sealed a six-wicket win with four balls to spare.

Sydney Thunder are overdue a win against Melbourne Renegades – they have won just one of their seven previous meetings and that was back in January 2014. The Renegades have won four in a row since then, including their only meeting last season. On that occasion, Marcus Harris top-scored with 64 in a total of 189/6 and Sydney were bowled out for 180 from the final ball – Kane Richardson claiming 4-22.
Despite their poor record in this fixture, Sydney Thunder go into this game in good batting shape. They are 1.80 to win with Betway, 1.85 with Bet365 and 1.90 with Betfair. Bet365 are offering the best price of 2.00 on the Melbourne Renegades to win.
Shane Watson could be a key figure, having scored 68 and 100 in his last two innings. He is 3.25 to be the Thunder’s top batsman with Bet365.
He and Anton Devcich have shared two useful opening partnerships in the last two games too, and they are 2.00 with Betfair to post the highest opening partnership – ahead of what is likely to be Aaron Finch and Matthew Harvey.
On the topic of Finch, with a huge point to prove he is 3.30 with Betfair to be the Renegades’ top batsman. It was a bowler who won this fixture for them last year though, and that man – Kane Richardson – is a best price of 3.75 with Betfair to repeat the trick and be their best bowler again.
With Aaron Finch leading the batting and in-form Kane Richardson the bowling, Melbourne Renegades will take some beating. But, if Shane Watson can continue his current form, the Sydney Thunder can do just that, and end their poor run of results in this fixture.
Final Verdict: Back Sydney Thunder to beat Melbourne Renegades at 1.90 with Betfair, 1.85 with Bet365 and 1.80 with Betway.
