Sydney Sixers Team News & Playing 11

SYS Team News

Nathan Lyon’s unavailability continues but Sydney Sixers have been largely unaffected by Australian international call-ups otherwise. Joe Denly has linked up with the England squad, with James Vince replacing him. The Sixers tweaked the batting line-up last time out, with Josh Philippe replacing Jake Edwards at the top of the order and the latter dropping seven. The only change to the starting line-up was Lloyd Pope’s return in place of Ben Manenti, however, and the winning side could be unchanged to face Hobart on the same ground.

SYS Key Players

Tom Curran has contributed with bat and ball for the Sixers this season, justifying his selection as one of their overseas players. The Englishman took 3-16 against Brisbane Heat last time out and now has 14 wickets from his ten games. He also scored 44 from 30 balls against Melbourne Renegades and has a top score of 62 from the game against Sydney Thunder.

Steve O’Keefe is still their leading wicket taker, however – and joint-top overall – with 16 to his name. He took 1-17, including bowling a maiden, in the win against Brisbane Heat. Sean Abbott took 3-18 and now has 15 for the tournament.

With the bat, Jordan Silk’s 41 from 26 balls moved him back ahead of Daniel Hughes as the Sydney Sixers’ leading run scorer this season. Silk now has 260 runs from ten innings, while Hughes has 237.

Captain Moises Henriques’ middle-order runs have contributed 195 so far, while James Vince proved what he is capable of when he top-scored with 75 from 46 balls in the win against Brisbane Heat last time out.

SYS Team Form

Sydney Sixers bounced back from consecutive defeats by comfortably beating Brisbane Heat last time out. The Sixers had previously failed to defend 177/5 against Perth Scorchers, in a seven-wicket loss, and then posted just 115/9 against the Melbourne Renegades despite Tom Curran’s late 44 from 30 balls. Again, they lost by seven wickets – this time with seven overs to spare.

Their most recent match saw a big improvement with the bat, however, led by James Vince’s 75 from 46 balls in a total of 177/7. In reply, Tom Curran claimed 3-16 and Sean Abbott 3-18 as the Heat limped to 98 all out.

Hobart Hurricanes Team News & Playing 11

HBH Team News

Jake Doran is back from his inclusion in the Cricket Australia XI that faced Sri Lanka and could replace Caleb Jewell. David Moody made way for Clive Rose’s return last time out, meanwhile, despite having taken two wickets on his T20 debut. Moody’s economy rate was presumably a factor in that decision.

HBH Key Players

D’Arcy Short is showing no sign of slowing – the leading run scorer in this year’s Big Bash League moved to 441 runs in nine innings when he hit an unbeaten 73 from 52 balls in the win against Adelaide Strikers – his fifth half-century so far.

He and opening partner Matthew Wade shared 158 in that ten-wicket win, with Wade actually claiming the highest score and man of the match with 84 from 49 balls. He is now second to Short in the run-scoring charts with three half-centuries and 323 runs in total. Both a strike rate around the 140 mark too.

Their batting excellence meant George Bailey was not called upon last time, but he had been the star against Perth Scorchers – 69 from 39 balls, his second half-century so far, taking him to 242 runs in seven innings.By taking 2-24 from his four overs last time out, James Faulkner moved to 15 wickets so far in this season’s Big Bash League. He has also contributed with bat – including two sixes and a four in the final over of their successful chase against Perth Scorchers.

Backing him up with the ball are Jofra Archer – the paceman getting back on track with 2-23 against the Strikers – and Riley Meredith, who has 14 wickets in total after his 1-39 in that game. He took 2-19 against Perth Scorchers and a match-winning 4-21 against Melbourne Stars too.

HBH Team Form

Melbourne Renegades remain the only team to have beaten Hobart Hurricanes in this season’s Big Bash League, and the league leaders have won three from three since that six-wicket defeat. George Bailey scored an unbeaten 70 in that loss, in a total of 145/5, but the Renegades got home in the final over.

Melbourne Stars were blown away next game, however – D’Arcy Short scored an unbeaten 96 from 57 balls and Matthew Wade added 41 in a total of 185/2, and Riley Meredith’s 4-21 saw the Stars bowled out for 126.
The match against Perth Scorchers was much closer, after the Hurricanes found themselves 96/5 after 12.1 overs chasing 178 to win. George Bailey hammered 69 from 39 balls, however, and James Faulkner – who conceded 22 in the final over of the Scorchers’ innings – hit two sixes and a four in the Hurricanes’ final over in a four-wicket win.
