They failed to defend 177/5 against a Cameron Bancroft-inspired Perth Scorchers, however, before their batsmen let them down last time out. Tom Curran’s late hitting lifted them to 115/9 from their 20 overs but that was never going to be enough and so it proved in a seven-wicket defeat with seven overs to spare.

It is with the ball they have struggled for consistency, though all-rounder Ben Cutting now has seven wickets to his name, as does Afghanistan’s teenager spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Brisbane Heat started this season’s Big Bash League with three consecutive defeats but they had won three from four before the floodlight failure caused by the Brisbane power cut last time out forced a no result against Sydney Thunder.
In truth, the floodlight failure helped them, having 10/2 from three overs in reply to 186/4, but they had looked good beforehand – not least in their record 101-run win against Melbourne Renegades. Brendon McCullum hit 69 from 43 balls and Chris Lynn an unbeaten 66 in a total of 192/4, while Brendan Doggett and Mitchell Swepson both took three wickets apiece to bowl the Renegades out for 91.It was revenge for defeat to the same opposition at the Gabba, when McCullum’s 47-ball half-century had been too little. The Heat posted 144/8 and the Renegades won by eight wickets with 4.2 overs to spare.
