Sri Lanka were much the better team in the opening Test match of the series and were excellent value for their 187 run victory. West Indies struggled to get a foothold throughout the first Test and were never in front over the entire five days. They hit no half-centuries in the first innings but Nkrumah Bonner (68 not-out) and Joshua da Silva (54) both did so in the second innings. Indeed, Bonner and da Silva put on a 100 run partnership to take West Indies from 18-6 to a more respectable total. Devon Chase took 5-83 in Sri Lanka’s first innings with Jomel Warrican picking up 5 wickets across the match.
