SRH Team News

Sunrisers Hyderabad's biggest selection decision will centre on whether to select opening batsman Alex Hales. The big-hitting England opener, signed to replace David Warner after the Australian ball-tampering scandal, was left out for the final group game after 148 runs at an average of 23.71 in his previous six matches. It allowed Carlos Braithwaite a first start in this year's competition, and though he scored just three with the bat, his 2/21 from 2.4 overs has given the selectors some food for thought after three straight defeats.

Basil Thampi's record-breaking 0-70 from four overs against Royal Challengers Bangalore saw him sidelined, which leaves Sunrisers Hyderabad with a fairly straight-forward decision – bring Hales back in to bolster the top order or stick with the extra bowling option. Braithwaite's two wickets may actually mean the West Indian edges it. That would also likely mean wicket-keeper Shreevats Goswami would open, after scoring 35 against Kolkata Knight Riders. He has played the last four matches behind the stumps.

SRH Key Players

Kane Williamson is second in the run-scoring list in this year's IPL, with 661 runs in the 14 league matches at an average of more than 60 and a good strike rate. He scored eight half-centuries in that time. Williamson has excelled batting at three, after opener Shikhar Dhawan has set the tone (with Hales, if he plays). Dhawan has 437 runs from 13 innings, including 79 from 49 balls when these teams last met.

With the ball, Siddarth Kaul has 17 wickets, while Rashid Khan is one behind on 16. Shakib-al-Hasan has weighed in with 13. Khan boasts the best economy of the three, going for just 7.21 runs per over in his 14 matches so far. Given how Mumbai has favoured the seamers, meanwhile, medium-pacer Sandeep Sharma will be hoping to recapture the form he showed earlier in the competition when he was taking wickets and bowling very economically with the new ball. He took in six wickets for just 66 runs during his four-match purple patch, but he has been less effective recently.

SRH Form in IPL 2018

Sunrisers Hyderabad's IPL season so far has been split into four blocks – they won their first three games, then lost two in a row, before hitting back with six consecutive victories before their recent three-match losing streak. The six wins in a row was enough to catapult up the table to seal top spot despite their poor finish, however.

Economical bowling was key in their first three matches, as they chased down targets of 126, 148 and 139 to start the season in style. Shikhar Dhawan scored 77 and 45 to top score in home wins against Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians before Kane Williamson's 50 in the win at Eden Gardens against Kolkata. The following two games saw them fail to chase down 193 against Kings XI Punjab and then fall four runs short of Chennai Super Kings' 182/3 in the first meeting between these two teams this year.

They hit back with more impressive bowling displays, however, defending 118 to beat Mumbai Indians by 31 runs in their most recent game at the Wankhede Stadium – Siddarth Kaul claiming 3/23 from four overs, Rashid Khan taking 2/11 and Sandeep Sharma bowling 14 dot balls out of 18 as he finished with three overs and figures of 1-9. They followed that up by defending 132/6 to beat Kings XI Punjab by 13 runs – Khan again impressing with 3/19 from his four overs.

The batsmen hit back thereafter, as Kane Williamson, Alex Hales and Shikhar Dhawan all weighed in with big scores in victories against Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Daredevils, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi again – the latter seeing Dhawan's 92* from 50 balls earn him the man of the match award, despite Rishabh Pant hitting an unbeaten 128 for the hosts.

Dhawan and Williamson have continued to impress with the bat even as Sunrisers' winning streak ended, meanwhile – Dhawan hit 78 in an eight-wicket defeat to Chennai Super Kings, Williamson scored a 42-ball 81 as Sunrisers fell 14 runs short of Royal Challengers Bangalore's target and then Dhawan hit a 50 in the final group game but the team could not defend 172/9 against Kolkata.

CSK Team News & Playing 11

CSK Team News

Chennai Super Kings' biggest selection decision ahead of the play-offs appears to be which combination of their overseas players to opt for. Faf du Plessis was given the nod ahead of Shane Watson for the final group game, but the South African scored just 14 in what was just his fourth appearance of this year's competition. It seems likely Watson will replace him at the top of the order therefore, having scored 438 runs in his 13 matches - including one century and two 50s - at a strike rate of 147.47. He struggled in the defeat to Delhi Daredevils but has generally been in excellent form.

Sam Billings is posing another headache for Chennai Super Kings, after scoring one and zero in his last two innings. He has only reached double figures twice in his last eight matches, though in the first of those he did go on to score 56. It could be that the Englishman misses out, and Du Plessis and Watson both play - in which case the impressive Ambati Rayudu may be asked to drop down to number three or four. The other overseas spots should be taken by West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo and in-form opening bowler Lungi Ngidi. The latter will expect some assistance from the Mumbai pitch as he bids to follow up his match-winning 4-10 (including one maiden) from the last match.

CSK Key Players

Ambati Rayudu has been one of the leading batsmen in the IPL 2018 season with 586 runs from 14 innings, including an unbeaten century - his first T20 hundred - when Chennai last faced Sunrisers Hyderabad. He is fourth in the run-scoring list for this year's competition, and alongside his 100 in the defeat of Sunrisers in Pune, he also scored 79 in the win in Deccan earlier in the year.

Chennai's strength has been their batting depth, too, with MS Dhoni averaging 89.20 from his 14 innings so far thanks to his useful knocks at the end of innings. The captain has scored 446 runs and has only been dismissed five times so far - scoring three half-centuries and passing 30 on several other occasions. Shane Watson, meanwhile, is just eight runs behind Dhoni on 438 runs so far. He scored a century to announce his return to form earlier in the tournament. Suresh Raina has contributed 391 runs, meanwhile, including an unbeaten 61 from 48 balls as Chennai won their final group game.

With the ball, Lungi Ngidi has been in outstanding form - his last seven overs have cost just 24 runs as he picked up 2/14 against Delhi Daredevils and 4/10 against Kings XI Punjab. He has nine wickets in total from five matches, and an outstanding economy rate of just 6.11. Shardal Thakur has been their leading wicket taker, however, with 14 from 11 matches.

CSK Form in IPL 2018

After a brilliant start to the tournament, on their return from a two-year ban, which saw Chennai win five of their first six matches, they have been inconsistent since - failing to win back-to-back games since. Their IPL 2018 started with a series of thrilling finishes - they beat Mumbai by one wicket with one ball to spare in the opening game, and then chased down Kolkata's 202 with one ball remaining again in their next match.

Kings XI Punjab halted their charge, winning by four runs in the third game, before Watson's century helped Chennai Super Kings beat Rajasthan Royals by 64 runs to get back to winning ways. Back-to-back victories, with Ambati Rayudu in superb batting form, followed against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Since then, however, they have not won consecutive matches as mentioned. Their total of 169/5 was not enough to beat Mumbai Indians, but they scored 211/4 in a 13-run win against Delhi Daredevils the following week. They then failed to defend 177/5 against Kolkata, but bounced back thanks to some superb bowling as they beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets. Jos Buttler's inspired form was too much for them next up, however, as they could not defend 176/4 against Rajasthan Royals.

They have won two of their final three matches, however, including an eight-wicket defeat of Sunrisers Hyderabad when these two teams last met. Ambati Rayudu’s unbeaten century fired them to victory. Rayudu scored a half-century in the next match, but – despite Lungi Ngidi having claimed 2/14 with the ball, Chennai struggled to 128/6 in a 34-run defeat to Delhi Daredevils. They beat Kings XI Punjab last up, however, with Ngidi claiming a superb 4/10 before Suresh Raina’s unbeaten 61 helped them to chase down 154 to win in 19.1 overs – Raina hit two sixes and two fours in the penultimate over, before Dhoni hit the match-winning maximum.

SRH vs CSK Head to Head

SRH vs CSK Head to Head

There have been nine matches played between these two teams, with Chennai winning seven of them. There were of course no matches in 2016 and 2017, however, with the Super Kings serving their two-year ban.

Prior to the ban, Sunrisers Hyderabad had won the most recent match between the two sides, hitting 192/7 in a 22-run victory, but their two matches this year have been won by the Ambati Rayudu-inspired Chennai Super Kings.

Rayudu hit 79 from just 37 balls as Chennai posted 182/3 in the first meeting, with Kane Williamson's 54-ball 81 not quite enough in reply as Sunrisers fell four runs short - Deepak Chahar claiming a match-winning 3/15 from his four overs to make the difference. And the Sunrisers will be sick of the sight of Rayudu, after he then hit an unbeaten century in the most recent match between the two. Shikhar Dhawan had scored 79 from 49 balls as Sunrisers posted 179/4 from their 20 overs, but Chennai reached the target with an over to spare thanks to Rayudu's knock. He and Shane Watson (57) shared 134 from 13.3 overs for the first wicket, before MS Dhoni's 20 not out helped Chennai to an eight-wicket win.

SRH vs CSK Betting Odds

Recent matches between the two teams means Sunrisers Hyderabad are outsiders for this match – despite finishing top of the group. They are 2.1 to win with Bet365, while Chennai Super Kings are 1.72.

It is little surprise either, as Chennai have the experience at this stage, and the big-name players such as MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina to handle the pressure of this play-off. That the South African captain in Faf du Plessis may be left out, and Chennai would still boast an experienced and strong squad, is a testament to that.

Ambati Rayudu top scored in both previous games against Sunrisers Hyderabad this season, meanwhile. He is 3.50 to be their top scorer again this time out. And with Lungi Ngidi in form, he is worth backing at 3.75 with Bet365 to be their top bowler.

On a pitch that suits seam-up bowling, Siddarth Kaul and Sandeep Sharma (4.50 and 5.00) respectively, are worth backing to be Sunrisers Hyderabad’s top bowlers while Kane Williamson is 3.25 to continue his fine form with the bat and be their leading batsman with Bet365.

Hyderabad vs Chennai Qualifier 1 Prediction

Chennai Super Kings boast a superior record against Sunrisers Hyderabad and go into this play-off on the back of a victory - unlike their opponents who have lost their last three matches in a row. Chennai also have plenty of play-off experience in their squad, and can make it three wins from three in head-to-head matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad this season to book their place in the final.

Final Verdict

Back Chennai Super Kings to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad at 1.72 with Bet365.
