Our Pick South Africa are favourites to win
After losing their last two series against Sri Lanka, South Africa now have an opportunity to get their dues settled as the second Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka gets underway at the Wanderers, Johannesburg on 3rd January.
South Africa had a near perfect game against Sri Lanka. Their batsmen performed well, their bowlers was right on the money and the fielding was exceptional too. This is a sort of performance we expect from a team like South Africa.
They've had a poor run in Tests since 2019 and only managed to win 4 off their 13 Test matches. A crushing win over Sri Lanka must have induced a lot of confidence in this South African team and we can expect their graph to go upward from here.
They have a decent batting with players like Dean Elgar, Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma. All of them looked in top form in the first Test.
The bowling too looks good in Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, Wiaan Mulder and Lutho Sipamla.
Sri Lanka on the other hand must be disappointed after losing the Test in 4 days. They did bat well in the first inning of the first Test but couldn't capitalize on the good start. This is problem they've been facing for a long time now.
Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis, Dimuth Karunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal, Dasun Shanaka and Niroshan Dickwella form a solid batting lineup and most of them had a good last game. The issue for them is their bowling that doesn't look threatening at all.
Vishwa Fernando, Kasun Rajitha, Lahiru Kumara, Wanindu Hasaranga are decent bowlers but they lack genuine wicket taking abilities.
In the Subcontinent you can get away with a bleak pace attack but in countries like South Africa, Australia and England, you need to have good fast bowlers to win matches.
Overall, in terms of batting we see Sri Lanka on par with South Africa but lack of quality bowlers will make it very difficult for them to trouble the South African batsmen. We're going in with South Africa as massive favourites for this game.
The series will be broadcasted live on Supersport in South Africa while Star Sports have the rights to telecast it in India.
Live Streaming: The match will be streamed live Disney Hotstar app in India.
Toss will be crucial as in Tests, until the conditions are extremely in favour of the bowlers, batting first is the most feasible option. The surface offered at the Wanderers will be flat thus both skipper would like to put runs on the board.
The weather doesn't look very promising with plenty of rain around. Brace yourself for some interruptions during the match.
The wicket will be flat, good for batting. Spinners will come into play on Day 4 and 5 of the match.
