Can Australia Keep themselves Alive in the Series?

South Africa recorded their second biggest ODI victory over Australia at the Wanderers on Sunday. They beat the World Champions by 142 runs to win the second one-dayer of the five-match series with three more to play. Up by 2-0, the hosts are just one more win away from clinching the series. Kingsmead, Durban will host the third one-day international on October 5. This will be a day/night contest with play scheduled to begin at 1:30 PM local time.

Read on for our betting tips and match prediction for South Africa vs Australia 3rd ODI...

Venue and Toss

Kingsmead normally produces high scoring contests as is evident from the recent games - the first innings scores in four of the last five day/night games have been 280 or thereabouts. 271 is the highest successful run chase here and so we feel that a first-innings score of around 270-280 should be about par.

There is a definite toss bias here as the side batting first has won four of these five day-nighters including the most recent two. Moreover, the highest second-innings score in these games is just 227. The toss-winning team, therefore, may look to bat first.

South Africa have went on to win their previous two games here after winning the toss and batting first. So the scales should tip in their favor if they bat first.

If SA Bat First

Predicted Score: 325-350

Hashim Amla has recovered from illness but there is no official word yet whether he will feature in Wednesday's game or not. If he does, that will be good news for South Africa and he will be the key in their batting as he averages 45.57 at this ground. If he doesn't, Rilee Rossouw who has hit two consecutive fifties in this series will be their next best bet. With good knocks from the in-form de Kock and du Plessis at the top, the hosts should not have much problems reaching the predicted total.

The South African batsmen have handled Adam Zampa's legspinners very well. So Australia will be counting on its faster bowlers for taking wickets upfront. Hastings, Marsh and Boland are the only ones who have been able to impress. Hastings and Boland have taken three wickets apiece while Marsh took two on Sunday. They will need to send South Africa's top three batsmen back to the pavilion early on if they don't want to be chasing a massive score.

If AUS Bat First

Predicted Score: 290-320

David Warner, George Bailey, Aaron Finch and Steven Smith are the ones who can help Australia get past 300. Warner has looked in good touch with 40 and 50 in his two innings and he is going to be the key member in their batting lineup. We expect him to score the most runs for Australia in this match. Bailey has also looked promising with 74 in the first game and he could also make a significant contribution with the bat.

Newcomer Andile Phehlukwayo has already notched up six wickets including a four-for in the first game. The Aussies have found it difficult to read his lengths and there are chances that the fast bowler could emerge as South Africa's top bowler on Wednesday. Dale Steyn is another speedster whom the Australians will be wary of. With 14 wickets from 8 matches, he is the leading wicket taker at this ground from the current South African squad. Australia may not reach the 300-mark if these two pacemen keep up their good work.

ODI Stats: Head-to-Head at Kingsmead

Seven ODIs have been played between the two sides at the Kingsmead, of which five have been won by Australia and two by the hosts. The last four clashes at this venue have all been won by Australia.

Our Prediction

Australia have wins in their last five ODIs at the Kingsmead which includes four against South Africa. They also have a higher win percentage of 75 as opposed to the hosts' 63.79. So the visitors definitely have an upper hand with respect to performances of both the teams at this ground.

But then again, this is not a full-strength Australian side and the inexperience in their bowling attack was clearly seen in the first two games. South Africa have been clinical with both the bat and the ball and have dented Australia's confidence by inflicting back-to-back crushing defeats on them.

This is a must win game for Australia and we have seen them rise from the worst of situations in the past. But we feel that the better balanced South Africa should be the favorites to win this match and hence the series.
