Sri Lanka are favorites to win
Sri Lanka will be looking to bounce back from their crushing defeat at the Riverside when they return to Chester-le-Street to face West Indies in their penultimate match of the 2019 Cricket World Cup group stage. The match is scheduled for July 1 and the live action begins at 10:30 local time.

While not always a successful tactic, West Indies have preferred to get at teams early – exposing them to their fierce pace, bounce and hostility by fielding first.
While still dry, Chester-le-Street will be overcast – playing even further into the hands of the swing bowlers.
This is only the second match of the tournament at Chester-le-Street so the pitch should be in great nick – dry and hard after the recent upturn in the English weather.

The meek surrender of Sri Lanka’s middle-order in the defeat to South Africa raised more questions of this Sri Lankan team. The response to that defeat could be batting changes, including Milinda Siriwardana and Lahiru Thirimanne being recalled. Kasun Rajitha, meanwhile, has replaced pace bowler Nuwan Pradeep who has been ruled out of the remainder of the World Cup with chickenpox. However, the former's inclusion in the playing eleven for this game has not been confirmed.
Lasith Malinga showed his best form when he ripped through England’s batting to earn a shock win. His four-fer in that game has helped him to nine wickets in five matches so far. Dhananjaya de Silva and Isuru Udana each have five.
With the bat, positives have been few. Captain Dimuth Karunaratne has two half-centuries to his name, however, and Kusal Perera does too. Perera has 191 runs overall to the captain’s 180.
Sri Lanka got back to winning ways with one of the shocks of the tournament – Lasith Malinga helping them to rip through England’s batting line-up as they successfully defended 232/9 in a 20-run win at Headingley.
Buoyed by that win, they then headed into Durham to face South Africa but they could not repeat their heroics. Dismissed for just 203 in 49.3 overs, South Africa chased it down to win by nine wickets in 37.2 overs.

With Andre Russell having had to return home injured, and with Evin Lewis also sidelined, replacement player Sunil Ambris stepped straight into the starting line-up to face India and will likely continue to open with Chris Gayle. Fabian Allen also returned but could be replaced by off-spinner Ashley Nurse for this game.
Though they ultimately fell well short again, West Indies’ top run-scorer, Chris Gayle, moved to 200 runs in six innings in the game against South Africa. Gayle has two half-centuries to his name, as do Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope.
Hope arrived at this World Cup in fine form and, while he has not replicated it consistently, he has shown glimpses of the form that has earned such a high ODI batting average.
With the ball, however, West Indies have impressed. Sheldon Cottrell’s two wickets moved him to 11 for the tournament. Kemar Roach took 3-36, meanwhile – his first three wickets of the tournament. Jason Holder claimed 2-33 to move to six for the tournament.
West Indies’ only win in this tournament was in their opening game, with five defeats and one rained-off match since. The Men In Maroon most recently followed a narrow five-run loss to New Zealand – in which Carlos Brathwaite’s century so nearly dragged them over the line – with a heavy defeat to India.
West Indies had bowled well against India next up – only some late hitting helping India to 268/7 – but their batsmen failed to follow suit. They were dismissed for 143 in 34.2 overs, as West Indies fell to a 125-run defeat.

This will be Sri Lanka and West Indies’ first ODI meeting since a Tri-Nation Series in Zimbabwe back in 2016. On that occasion, West Indies comfortably won the first game but the second was a thriller. Sri Lanka posted 3307 and, in reply, West Indies finished just short on 329/9. Sri Lanka’s win was their 25th in this fixture, but West Indies still have 28 with three no results.
Matches Played | SL Won | WI Won | Tie | No Result |

Sri Lanka are outsiders with the bookmakers but, with West Indies having failed to win since the opening match, it is the Asian side who can claim a victory and upset the odds.
Chris Gayle could be a key figure for the West Indies. For the Men in Maroon to post the highest opening partnership and the highest 15-over score, it is 2.40.
Sri Lanka to win, Mathews to score 50+ and Kemar Roach to take over 1.5 wickets has been set at 6.00 with Betway’s #betyourway.
You can also get 3.00 on Kusal Perera to take a catch and hit a six and the same on opposite number Shai Hope doing likewise for the West Indies.
The general pricing means you should be able to pick a strong squad regardless of budget.
Wicket-keeper
Shai Hope and Kusal Perera have both showed glimpses of their best form and deserve to be selected at 9.5 credits each.
Batsmen
Chris Gayle can not be left out, even if he is inconsistent lately. Sri Lanka skipper Dimuth Karunaratne is another that must be selected, while Avishka Fernando and Sunil Ambris could serve up some value for money.
All-rounders
On the all-rounder front, Carlos Brathwaite showed his best form in the defeat to New Zealand. Jason Holder is another option in there, after excellent bowling so far.
Bowlers
Lasith Malinga and Sheldon Cottrell have ensured nobody in their right mind would leave them out as bowlers. That leaves 8.5 credits, of which Isuru Udana is going to use them.
Captain/Vice-captain
Chris Gayle is West Indies’ star man, but this pitch could favour bowling and with overcast conditions too, it is a day for Lasith Malinga and co.
BATSMEN | ALL ROUNDER | WICKET KEEPER | BOWLER |
---|---|---|---|
Chris Gayle (vc) | Carlos Brathwaite | Shai Hope | Lasith Malinga (c) |
Dimuth Karunaratne | Jason Holder | Kusal Perera | Isuru Udana |
Sunil Ambris | Sheldon Cottrell | ||
Avishka Fernando | |||
Though they are outsiders, with West Indies in poor form since their opening game Sri Lanka can take full advantage.
