After completing an IT20 series and an ODI series, Sri Lanka and Australia turn their attention to Test cricket. The First Test begins on Wednesday at the Galle International Stadium. Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh in their most recent Test last month. Australia won 1-0 away in Pakistan earlier this year. Read on as we preview this game. The opening Test of the two-game series begins at 10:00 local time.
Sri Lanka are looking to extend their two game unbeaten run in Test cricket. They will come into this Test with plenty of self-belief after running Australia close in the IT20s and winning the ODI series.
Australia are strong in all conditions and very hard to beat in this format. They have not lost a Test since January 2021 and the players will be acclimatised after the short format series and ‘A’ games.

After impressing in the recently concluded ODI series, wrist spinner Jeffrey Vandersay has been called up to the Test squad for the first time and we expect him to make his debut in this game. This will be the first home Test series for new coach Chris Silverwood.
Sri Lanka were impressive in their recent series win away in Bangladesh. They have won their last three Tests at home.

Pat Cummins’ side showed plenty of character, resilience and talent in their recent away Test series win over Pakistan. They are hard to beat in any format but particularly in Tests. We do not expect to see any debuts handed out ahead of this opening game.
Australia are in excellent form and were dominant against England during the Ashes. In Pakistan, where conditions will be similar to Sri Lanka, they showed determination and ability against the spinning ball.

After Australia won the IT20 series and Sri Lanka won the ODI series, the bookies are expecting a closely fought opening Test Match. The visitors go into the match as favourites.
There should be plenty of runs on offer in the two first innings of this game. Both teams have a fantastic list of batters on show and it would be a surprise if there were not some centuries registered.
For Sri Lanka, we are backing Dimuth Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews and Pathum Nissanka with the bat. Nissanka averages 44.90 in Tests and scored a century in the ODI series earlier this month.
Steve Smith, Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne are our picks for Australia with the bat. Khawaja is in scintillating form and has averaged 125.16 since being recalled to the Test side in January.
Lasith Embuldeniya, Jeffrey Vandersay and Vishwa Fernando are our bowling picks for Sri Lanka. Fernando made his debut here against Australia and took a wicket with his second delivery.
Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc are our bowling recommendations for Australia. Starc missed the ODIs through injury but is now fit and will be used in short spells to try and break partnerships with his pace in this Test.
