Rajasthan Royals retained 16 of their 25 players from last season and have added Liam Livingstone and Ashton Turner as overseas players this year. They also have one of the joint-most expensive Indians from the 2019 IPL Auction too, in Jaydev Unadkat.

Jos Buttler was Rajasthan Royals’ star man last season, hitting five half-centuries on his way to 548 runs in total. The big-hitting Englishman’s form earned him a test recall and he has not looked back. His most recent T20 experience was at the Big Bash League, where he hit three half-centuries in seven matches for Sydney Thunder.

Rajasthan have added another big-hitting Englishman this year too, in Liam Livingstone. Livingstone impressed for Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League, with three half-centuries and 321 runs in total.

With a wealth of batting talent at the Royals’ disposal, he will now compete with Ashton Turner for a place in the side – Turner having been one of the star batsmen at the Big Bash League. He scored 378 runs in 14 innings, including three half-centuries, for Perth Scorchers.

Steve Smith is available again, meanwhile, and has a lot to prove after his ban last year, while their other overseas options include Ben Stokes. Ish Sodhi could also fill one of the spots, having been in excellent wicket-taking form for Northern Districts in the New Zealand domestic game.

Away from their overseas stars, Jaydev Unadkat continues to command a high price in the auction and arrives on the back of 12 wickets in his last five matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Saurashtra. He took 11 wickets in 15 matches last year. Sanju Samson hit 441 runs last year and Ajinkya Rahane scored 370.

Jos Buttler hit five consecutive 50s for Rajasthan Royals last season as he led them to fourth place in the table, though his England recall meant he missed the play-off and Rajasthan crashed out.

Chasing 170 to beat Kolkata Knight Riders, Ajinkya Rahane (46) and Sanju Samson (50) were in the runs but the run rate got away from them and they finished on 144/4.

Kings XI Punjab retained just nine players from last season’s squad – considerably less than any other team – as they look to get back on track after their losing streak cost them a play-off spot. Retained players include Purple Cap winner Andrew Tye, captain Ravichandran Ashwin and Chris Gayle. They have the joint-most expensive Indian auction acquisition in Varun Chakravarthy, while Nicholas Pooran, Mohammed Shami, Prab Simran Singh and Sam Curran were other costly purchases.

Andrew Tye claimed 24 wickets in 14 matches last season, with his bowling a large factor in Kings XI Punjab’s early success. The Australian paceman showed flashes of that form in the BBL too, and now has 176 wickets from his 123 career T20 appearances.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman, the Afghan teenager, is also retained. He took wickets in the BBL, and claimed seven in four ODIs for Afghanistan against Ireland most recently. Mohammed Shami will bolster the pace line-up, meanwhile. He took nine wickets in four ODIs against New Zealand and five in four against Australia in his most recent outings.

Varun Chakravarthy’s mystery spin and excellent performances in the Tamil Nadu Premier League saw him attract a huge price in the IPL auction, meanwhile.

With the bat, Chris Gayle recaptured his best form during West Indies recent series against England. He hit scores of 135, 50, 162 and 77 during the ODI series. Countryman Nicholas Pooran is an exciting addition to the line-up, meanwhile. Pooran has burst onto the scene in the last 12 months or so, starring for Sylhet Sixers at the Bangladesh Premier League and hitting a half-century against England earlier this month too.KL Rahul was their top run scorer by a long way last season, meanwhile. He hit six half-centuries and 659 runs in total from 14 matches.

KXIP Team Form

Kings XI Punjab were top of the IPL after nine matches last season, having won six of them. They did not win again, however, losing the last five in a row to drop to seventh and miss out on the play-offs.
