Chennai Super Kings have won the toss seven times so far, with a tendency to field first. After unsuccessfully batting first last time out, that trend is likely to continue too.

Royal Challengers Bangalore handed a first start of the season to Dale Steyn against Kolkata, after the South African was selected as a replacement player for Nathan Coulter-Nile. Steyn was one of two players to come into the team, with Umesh Yadav making way, as Heinrich Klaasen replaced AB de Villiers in the other change. De Villiers was out with a mild concussion but could return against Chennai.
Virat Kohli’s outstanding century against Kolkata carried Royal Challengers Bangalore to victory. The India captain scored nine fours and four sixes in his 58-ball knock. With two half-centuries to his name too, the Indian captain now has 378 runs in this season’s tournament.
It moved Kohli back ahead of AB de Villiers, with the South African out, but De Villiers has scored more half-centuries (four so far) and has a higher strike rate at 154.27.
Moeen Ali also impressed last time out, scoring his second half-century as he hammered 66 in 28 balls. It was his second consecutive half-century. Ali also bowled the final over as Royal Challengers claimed victory.
Dale Steyn marked his first appearance of the season with two wickets, meanwhile – recording figures of 2-40. He could be the missing cog for RCB in this campaign, with Bangalore missing someone to lead their bowling attack.
Also impressing last time out was Marcus Stoinis, who took 1-32. Stoinis was in superb all-round form at the Big Bash League.
After losing their opening six games, Royal Challengers Bangalore have now won two of the last three. They ended their losing streak with a eight-wicket win against Kings XI Punjab thanks to Virat Kohli’s 67 and AB de Villiers’ unbeaten 59 from 38 balls to lead a chase of 174 to win.
Defeat to Mumbai Indians followed, failing to defend 171/7 (De Villiers top scoring with 75) as they lost by five wickets, but they bounced back last time out.
Kohli hammered 100 from 58 balls as Royal Challengers posted 213/4 against Kolkata Knight Riders and, despite some late hitting, they held on to win by ten runs.
Virat Kohli (c), Parthiv Patel (wk), AB de Villiers, Moeen Ali, Marcus Stoinis, Akshdeep Nath, Pawan Negi, Mohammed Siraj, Navdeep Saini, Dale Steyn, Yuzvendra Chahal
Chennai Super Kings will have MS Dhoni back for the game against Royal Challengers Bangalore after he missed the last game with a back spasm. That injury necessitated two changes, as Sam Billings replaced Dhoni as wicket-keeper/batsman and Mitchell Santner was replaced by Karn Sharma to free up the overseas slot. Santner could also return for this one.
Chennai Super Kings’ two World Cup-bound South Africans, Faf du Plessis and Imran Tahir, continued to impress last time out despite the defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Tahir moved to 15 wickets in the tournament after taking 2-20 from his four overs, while Du Plessis had earlier top-scored with 45 from 31 balls in the Chennai innings.
Only Delhi’s Kagiso Rabada has more wickets than Tahir so far in IPL 2019, while his economy rate of 5.67 is also hugely impressive. Next on Chennai’s bowling list is Deepak Chahar, meanwhile – he has 11 from nine matches at an economy rate of 6.97.
Du Plessis now has 173 runs from five innings, meanwhile. Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni have both outscored him, however – Dhoni hitting two half-centuries on his way to 230 runs so far, while Raina has scored 207.
Chennai’s four-match winning streak ended with defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad last time out. Faf du Plessis scored 45 from 31 balls, but their total of 132/5 was always well below par as Sunrisers cruised to a six-wicket win.
The Super Kings had been pushed twice in each of their last two games, however. Suresh Raina’s half-century led them to a five-wicket win against Kolkata with just two balls to spare – Imran Tahir earlier claimed 4-27 as Kolkata posted 161/8.
The previous game was even closer – MS Dhoni scoring 58 before Mitchell Santner hit the winning runs off the final ball in a four-wicket win against Rajasthan.

Since returning to the IPL, Chennai Super Kings have won all three games they have played against Royal Challengers Bangalore and now 16 in total compared to seven defeats.
Chennai won both games last season and then kicked off this season with a crushing win against Bangalore. At home, they bowled Royal Challengers out for just 70 – Harbhajan Singh (3-20) and Imran Tahir (3-9) leading the way – before cruising to a seven-wicket win.
Royal Challengers Bangalore might have come back into form but they have lost all three matches they have played against Chennai Super Kings since the latter’s IPL return last year. Chennai, despite defeat last time out, remain the form team and will welcome captain MS Dhoni back for this clash too
Virat Kohli was at his very best last time out and he will be re-joined by AB de Villiers in a batting line-up that also has Moeen Ali and Marcus Stoinis coming into form. But Chennai Super Kings – a blip last time out, without MS Dhoni, aside – are still the top team in the country and will, as ever, take some beating.
