Otago Sparks are favorites to win
Otago Sparks will take on Central Hinds at University Oval, Dunedin. Match 25 of the 2022-23 Women’s Super Smash gets underway at 11:00 local time on Sunday 29th January.
With the Sparks down in fourth place, they will be relishing the opportunity to play bottom of the table Central Hinds again in this match. It was a close contest last Friday when they last met but the Sparks came out on top by four wickets.
21 year old opener Olivia Gain hit 43 runs from 34 balls in Match 20 and shared an opening partnership of 41 with Bella James inside five overs. Kate Ebrahim has been in consistent form in the Super Smash and also hit 81 in the one-day trophy last Saturday.
Otago Sparks’s bowlers had a good day in the last clash with Central Hinds and will be looking to go one better in this match and bowl them all out. 21 year old medium pacer Emma Black took 4-15 but we expect international Hayley Jensen to be the main threat in this game.
Otago Sparks have lost only one of their last four matches in this tournament.
A 25 run (DLS) defeat was the latest setback for Central Hinds in this year’s competition on Friday. They have now lost all eight of their matches and are six point adrift of Northern Brave Women in fifth and 14 points behind Otago Sparks in fourth.
Chasing 137 from 18 overs, skipper Natalie Dodd went about her innings as if she believed there was a victory to be had against Canterbury Magicians in Match 23. Her run a ball 50 included only four boundaries but she understood the importance of keeping the scoreboard moving. We expect more of the same in this match.
There was a wicket in the second over of the game and Canterbury Magicians were reduced to 68-3 when the dangerous Kate Satterthwaite was dismissed on Friday. Off-spinner Jess Watkins took two wickets but we expect the seamers to be more of a threat on this pitch.
Central Hinds are low on confidence and form after losing eight in a row so far in the tournament.
The match will be played at University Oval, Dunedin. Any score over 140 should be enough to win this game on a pitch which we expect to provide consistent bounce.

Suzie Bates(c), Olivia Gain, Polly Inglis(wk), Kate Ebrahim, Caitlin Blakely, Felicity Leydon-Davis, Bella James, Hayley Jensen, Eden Carson, Emma Black, Sophie Oldershaw
Kerry-Anne Tomlinson, Kate Gaging, Jess Watkin(c), Ocean Bartlett, Natalie Dodd(wk), Rosemary Mair, Mikaela Greig, Georgia Atkinson, Hannah Rowe, Claudia Green, Flora Devonshire
Although the batting form of Natalie Dodd does give Central Hinds some hope, there are not many other reasons to give for why they might win this match. Otago Sparks had a poor start to the tournament but have improved over recent games and we are backing them to win this game.
