Kane Williamson successfully elected to bowl first at Edgbaston last time New Zealand were in Birmingham and that same tactic could be deployed again.
As with the last match in Birmingham, there will be some overnight rain but the match itself should take place in cloudy, humid conditions – perfect for swing bowling.
The overhead conditions combined with Edgbaston’s heavy wicket should make this a game for the bowlers.

New Zealand are yet to make any changes, sticking with the same XI for all five of their completed matches, and they could remain unchanged against Pakistan. That would mean Tim Southee and Henry Nicholls remain sidelined, having missed the earlier part of the tournament through injury.
Kane Williamson has been in brilliant batting form, leading New Zealand to victory in their last two matches. The captain hit an unbeaten century, including the winning runs, in the last-over victory against South Africa last time they were at Edgbaston, before scoring 148 in the win against West Indies. He now has 373 runs from four innings.
Ross Taylor is their next highest scorer, with 200 so far, having reached the milestone with his 69 – including a 160-run partnership with Williamson – in the win against West Indies.
Martin Guptill and Colin Munro both fell in the first over, facing just one ball each, but their explosive batting is well known, and both have half-centuries to their name so far in this tournament too.
New Zealand’s strength is how well-balanced they are and, complementing the batsmen, is a pace attack led by world number two ODI bowler Trent Boult. Boult took 4-30 last time out and the conditions at Edgbaston should suit him perfectly.
Lockie Ferguson is their leading wicket-taker with 14 meanwhile, after taking three last time out, and Matt Henry has weighed in with eight in total.
New Zealand have won all five of their completed matches so far at this Cricket World Cup, only missing out when the rain forced a no result against India.
The rain and the schedule meant a long wait between fixtures for Kane Williamson’s side, but the captain has led from the front on their return. Against South Africa, he scored an unbeaten century as New Zealand chased 242 to win by four wickets in the final over.Last time out, meanwhile, Williamson hit 148 in a total of 291/8 against West Indies. Trent Boult then claimed 4-30 with the ball and took the match-winning catch to dismiss Carlos Brathwaite as West Indies finished just five runs short.

Haris Sohail seized his opportunity against South Africa, top-scoring for Pakistan after being restored to the XI in place of Shoaib Malik. Shaheen Afridi was the other player to come in after the defeat to India, picking up a wicket after replacing Hasan Ali.
Pakistan’s top three were all in the runs again last time out. Openers Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman each scored 44, while Babar Azam’s 69 – his second half-century of the tournament – took him to 232 runs in total.
Haris Sohail top-scored, meanwhile, hitting 89 as he recaptured some of the form he showed in hitting two centuries in the series defeat to Australia.
Pakistan continue to boast one of the tournament’s leading wicket-takers too. Mohammad Amir’s 2-49 last time out took him to 15 wickets in total. Wahab Riaz is next on Pakistan’s list – his three against South Africa took him to eight in total.
Pakistan got back to winning ways last time out, posting 308/7 against South Africa at Lord’s before restricting the Proteas to 259/9.
They had lost their previous two matches – batting second on both occasions. They could only reach 212/6 from 40 overs in reply to India’s 336/5 from 50 at Old Trafford, losing by 89 runs on the DLS method. Against Australia, meanwhile, they folded for 266 at Taunton in reply to the Aussies’ 307.

New Zealand and Pakistan drew their most recent ODI series, in the UAE in November 2018, with one win apiece and one result. New Zealand won the opening game, with Ross Taylor’s 80 leading them to 266/9 before Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson helped restrict Pakistan to 219 all-out.
Taylor’s 86 not out could not lift New Zealand beyond 209/9 next up, however. Ferguson took three more wickets, but Fakhar Zaman’s 86 helped Pakistan home with 9.3 overs – and six wickets – to spare.
Pakistan have now won 54 of their 106 previous games against New Zealand, while the Black Caps have won 48.

New Zealand are well on course for a top-four spot, sitting top of the table after six matches, and are consequently comfortable favourites to beat Pakistan. Kane Williamson’s recent run-scoring makes him well worth backing.
In-form batting duo Kane Williamson and Babar Azam are 4.50 to each score 50 with Betway’s #betyourway.
Together, the two are 10.00 to each be their respective teams’ top batsmen too.
On the bowling front, Trent Boult and Mohammad Amir to each be their team’s top bowler is priced at 10.00 too.
With both teams boasting some of the world’s leading ODI batsmen, there is no surprise to find this Dream XI leaning towards the batsmen.
Wicket-keeper
Both Sarfaraz Ahmed and Tom Latham are priced at 8.5 credits, but Ahmed has been called on to bat a little more than Latham and appears to be the better pick.
Batsmen
Kane Williamson is in sublime form, after back-to-back centuries, while Ross Taylor hit two half-centuries in his last two innings against Pakistan. For Pakistan, the top three of Babar Azam, Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman are all capable of big runs too.
All-rounders
Colin de Grandhomme starred with bat and ball in New Zealand’s last match at Edgbaston and, at 8.5 credits, looks to be worth picking up
Bowlers
Mohmmad Amir is among the tournament’s leading wicket-takers so far and is a must-pick as a bowler. That leaves three spots, two of which can be filled with back-on-form Trent Boult and the Black Caps’ top wicket-taker in the tournament, Lockie Ferguson. With one space and eight credits left, that is just enough for Shaheen Afridi – he returned to the team last time out and could retain his place after Pakistan’s win.
Captain/Vice-captain
Kane Williamson’s form makes him difficult to overlook for the captaincy, while the same rings true of bowlers like Mohammad Amir and Trent Boult.

Only the rain has stopped New Zealand so far and, led by Kane Williamson’s batting excellence, they come into this game in superb form. A Black Caps win, against inconsistent Pakistan, will set them up well to try and finish the group in first place.
