South Western Districts are favourites to win
Northern Cape will take on South Western Districts at Buffalo Park, East London. Match 3 in Pool B of the CSA Provincial T20 Cup 2022/23 begins at 10:00 local time on Saturday 1st October.
After losing all three of their games in this competition last season, Northern Cape were prevented from getting their season underway by the rain in East London on Friday. They were due to play Eastern Cape in the Cape derby but the sides will now hope to meet again in the latter stages of the tournament.
Ernest Kemm was the most impressive batter for Northern Cape in the 2021 campaign and we expect him to be their biggest source of runs in this year’s tournament. Kemm’s top score was 83 not out and he should get some strong support with the bat from Rivaldo Moonsamy.
Johann van Dykk took five wickets in last year’s tournament and the condition of this pitch should make his job easier in this match. Alongside van Dykk, we expect medium pacer Jerome Xaba and leg-spinner Juan Lansberg to be the main bowling threats.
It was a tough season for Northern Cape last year but the changes in personnel should be enough to see them be more competitive this time around.
Districts went all the way to the quarter-finals in the 2021 campaign but saw their opening game of the 2022 season, against Limpopo, washed out due to heavy rain in East London on Friday. Limpopo were the worst team last year and Districts will be disappointed to have missed out on the chance to play them.
Andre Malan, brother of South African internationals Janneman and Pieter, is a fine T20 batter who has scored four half-centuries in this format. He will bat at the top of the order for Districts who will look to Matthew Christensen to also contribute with the bat.
Hershell America was only one wicket from being the top wicket taker in the 2021 CSA Provincial T20 Cup. He got 10 dismissals and was only beaten to the top spot by bowlers who played in more games than him. The medium pacer should be able to extract some movement from this pitch.
The Districts were excellent in the group stage last season and are still looking for their first opportunity to make amends for their quarter final defeat.
The match will be played at Buffalo Park, East London. Both games were postponed here on Friday due to heavy rain. We expect a slow outfield with the wicket providing plenty of assistance for the quick bowlers.

Hanu Viljoen, VB Mahlangu, GM Thomson, EH Kemm(C), KR Smuts, JP Oakes, R Moonsamy, T Ntuli, A Rasemene, Johan Van-Dyk, K Mohale

With both these teams seeing their opening games washed out on Friday, they will both be very keen to put on an entertaining fixture. With all the recent rain, it could be a tough batting wicket and the side with the best bowling attack should win. We are backing South Western Districts to get the victory.
