Melbourne Renegades Team News & Playing 11

MLR Team News

Kane Richardson returned to the starting XI last time out and was straight back in the wickets, having missed the previous two games with a hamstring injury. He was one of two players to return against Sydney Sixers, replacing Joe Mennie, as Cameron White came in for Beau Webster too. Usman Shinwari has departed for international duty with Pakistan, with Harry Gurnery playing the last two matches as a result.

MLR Key Players

Captain Tom Cooper fell just short of becoming just the second Renegades’ batsman to score a half-century this season when he departed for 49 of 33 balls in the win against Sydney Sixers. Sam Harper is the batsman to have passed 50 – which he did in the win against Brisbane Heat – and he moved to 220 runs for the tournament with 31 last time out.The Renegades’ bowling has been their biggest strength, and Mohammad Nabi was the star man last time out with 4-25 from his four overs. He also hit a six to win the match, from the only ball he faced with the bat.

Kane Richardson’s return was a big boost too. He took 3-26 from his four overs to move to 14 for the tournament so far – doubly impressive when you consider he missed two matches through injury too.

The Renegades have lots of T20 experience in their ranks, with all-rounder Dan Christian contributing with bat and ball so far and big-hitting Cameron White back in the team and back in form with two sixes in his 16 not out from six balls.

MLR Team Form

Melbourne Renegades have won three of their last four matches, with their only defeat a heavy 101-run loss against Brisbane Heat, where they were bowled out for just 91 in 17.5 overs replying to 192/4.

That ended a run of back-to-back wins, which had started with a six-wicket win against in-form Hobart Hurricanes, during which Aaron Finch posted 42 from 32 balls in the reply to 150/4, and Dan Christian and Mohammad Nabi upped the ante with some late hitting to seal a six-wicket win.

Next up they beat Brisbane, with Usman Shinwari claiming 3-16 with the ball and Sam Harper hitting a half-century in a comfortable eight-wicket win from 15.4 overs replying to 144/8. The Heat hit back in the next match but the Renegades got back to winning ways by thrashing Sydney Sixers last time out. Mohammad Nabi took 4-25 from four overs to restrict the Sixers to 115/9, and the Renegades claimed a seven-wicket win with seven overs to spare as Tom Cooper top-scored with 49 from 33 balls.

Melbourne Stars Team News & Playing 11

MLS Team News

Scott Boland paid the price for two wicketless matches when he was replaced by teenage debutant Tom O’Connell last time out, but the Stars have limited options for further changes due to four international call-ups – Peter Handscomb, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa all joining the Australian ODI squad.

MLS Key Players

Ben Dunk has scored 102 runs in his last three innings, leading the way in the absence of the Stars’ four Australian ODI squad members. He has not been backed enough, however, with fit-again new captain Nic Maddinson yet to find his batting rhythm.

Dwayne Bravo has scored 52 runs in the last two games and has nine wickets so far with the ball – including taking 3-27 against the Renegades in the derby on New Year’s Day – but more runs are needed.

Elsewhere with the ball, teenager Tom O’Connell marked his debut with the first wicket last time out in one of few highlights for the Stars against Hobart Hurricanes. Liam Plunkett was expensive, with the England international still yet to hit his best form despite a four-wicket haul against Adelaide Strikers. He has six wickets in four games so far.

MLS Team Form

Since losing the quartet of Glenn Maxwell, Peter Hanscomb, Marcus Stoinis and Adam Zampa to international duty, Melbourne Stars have lost all three matches they have played. The first of those saw Ben Dunk score 62 from 47 balls in a total of 146/6 against Perth Scorchers, but that proved well below-par as the Scorchers won by six wickets with 2.2 overs to spare.

The Stars were then all out for 137 in reply to Adelaide Strikers’ 178/5 in their next game – Liam Plunkett’s four-wicket haul counting for nothing – and they fell short with the bat again last time out, this time against Hobart Hurricanes. The Hurricanes posted 185/2 at the MCG and the hosts were dismissed for 126 in reply.

Melbourne Stars Predicted Playing 11

Ben Dunk, Evan Gulbis, Nic Maddinson, Jonathan Merlo, Seb Gotch, Dwayne Bravo, Nick Larkin, Liam Plunkett, Liam Bowe, Jackson Bird, Tom O'Connell

Melbourne Renegades vs Melbourne Stars Head to Head

Melbourne Stars’ derby win on New Year’s Day was their tenth in 14 previous matches against Melbourne Renegades. The ‘Gades have won just four times, though both teams won one game apiece last season.

The Renegades were victorious at the MCG, with Mohammad Nabi in top all-round form as he took 1-27 and then scored 52 from 30 balls as the Renegades chased 158 to win by six wickets. The Stars hit back at Docklands, however, despite 2-15 from Nabi, as Kevin Pietersen top-scored with 74 in a total of 167/4. In reply, the Renegades finished 144/9 – Jackson Coleman claiming 3-27.

In this season’s game, Dwayne Bravo took 3-27 as the Renegades were restricted to 148/9 at the MCG and, in reply, Marcus Stoinis led the way by smashing 78 not out from 49 balls in a seven-wicket win, with 13 balls to spare.

Melbourne Renegades vs Melbourne Stars Betting Odds

Melbourne Renegades are in far better form than the Melbourne Stars and the odds reflect that – despite the Renegades’ generally poor record in this fixture. Bet365 are offering 1.80 on a Renegades win, while Betfair have priced them at 1.83 and Betway at 1.75. Bet365 have the best price of 2.00 on the Melbourne Stars.

Kane Richardson’s return from injury is a boost for the Renegades and he could be key – he is 3.60 to be their top bowler after returning with 3-26 from four overs in their last match.

Mohammad Nabi was the star man, however, and he is 7.00 to be top bowler. He also played well in both Melbourne derbies last season too – but he has not consistently taken wickets like Richardson has this season.

🏆 Melbourne Renegades vs Melbourne Stars Prediction

Melbourne Stars might have a good record in this fixture but they are missing some key players to international duty and they have suffered of late as a result.

Final Verdict: Back Melbourne Renegades to beat Melbourne Stars at 1.75 with Betway, 1.80 with Bet365 and 1.83 with Betfair
