Kolkata have lost their toss in their last two matches and been asked to bat, with the general trend at Eden Gardens being to field first.

Kolkata Knight Riders rang the changes last time out, with changes to their overseas contingent. Joe Denly, Carlos Brathwaite and Lockie Ferguson all came into the team, with Sunil Narine, Chris Lynn and Harry Gurney dropping out. The changes proved unsuccessful, however, with Denly out first ball and the two bowlers proving expensive and wicketless. There could therefore be changes again this time out.
Despite defeat to Delhi Capitals last time out, Andre Russell’s superb form in IPL 2019 continued as he hit 45 from 21 balls with the bat and took 1-29 from three overs with the ball. Russell became the third IPL batsman to pass 300 runs so far this season as a result. He is also KKR’s top wicket-taker.
Joe Denly was out first ball but will hope for a second chance with the bat, meanwhile – he was in good form for Sydney Sixers at the Big Bash League prior to his England selection earlier this year.
Shubman Gill was their top scorer last time out, meanwhile. He hit 65 having pushed up the order to open. Elsewhere, Robin Uthappa moved to 211 runs from seven innings, while Nitish Rana has 180 from six.
Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav has only taken three wickets so far, but he has a good economy rate and has shown his match-winning ability for India on numerous occasions in the past year too.
After four wins in their first five games, Kolkata have lost their two most recent matches – starting with defeat in their most recent game against Chennai Super Kings.
Andre Russell’s unbeaten 50 lifted them to 108/9 but that was never likely to be enough in a seven-wicket defeat with 2.4 overs to spare.
Last time out, Kolkata faced Delhi Capitals and posted 178/7 thanks to Shubman Gill’s 65 and Russell’s 45 from 21 balls. They failed to defend it, however – Delhi getting home to win by seven wickets with seven balls to spare.

Chennai Super Kings’ captain MS Dhoni, the man of the match in their most recent match, remains available after escaping a ban for his on-field confrontation with umpire Ulhas Gandhe in that win against Rajasthan. Mitchell Santner and Shardul Thakur returned to the team for that game, in place of Harbhajan Singh and Scott Kuggeleijn. Harbhajan took 2-15 in the previous game against Kolkata but has only played in one match away from Chennai so far this season. Dwayne Bravo is currently unavailable due to a hamstring injury.
While the headlines focussed on his angry confrontation with the umpire during Chennai’s tense chase against Rajasthan, MS Dhoni had earlier proved his quality with his second half-century of this year’s tournament. He has hit scores of 32*, 75*, 12, 37* and 58 so far and leads Chennai’s batting charts.
The Super Kings have strength throughout their batting line-up, with Ambati Rayudu scoring 57 in that chase, and Faf du Plessis scoring an unbeaten 43 in the win against Kolkata when these teams last met.
Shane Watson has not showed the consistent form he displayed in Pakistan, but the Australian should never be written off at the top of the order either.
Chennai’s bowlers have been key to their success so far, meanwhile. Deepak Chahar has taken ten wickets in seven matches so far, while Imran Tahir has weighed in with nine. They have excellent economy rates of 6.29 runs per over and 5.61 runs per over respectively too.
Chennai have been in superb form so far this season, with six wins from seven games so far. The Super Kings’ only defeat came against Mumbai Indians, since when they have won three in a row.
Faf du Plessis scored 54 in a total of 160/3 as they beat Kings XI Punjab by 22 runs, before the South Africa captain’s unbeaten 43 led them to a seven-wicket victory against Kolkata – the Knight Riders having posted just 108/9.
Last time out, chasing 152 to beat Rajasthan Royals, Chennai scored 21 off the final over to claim a thrilling four-wicket win – Mitchell Santner hitting the last ball for six, after Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni both hit half-centuries.

Chennai’s win when these two teams last met was their 13th in 21 previous games against Kolkata Knight Riders, with the Knight Riders having won the other eight.
Deepak Chahar (3-20), Harbhajan Singh (2-15) and Imran Tahir (2-21) restricted Kolkata to 108/9 despite Andre Russell’s half-century, and the Super Kings claimed a comfortable seven-wicket win.
They had previously own one game apiece on Chennai’s return to IPL action last season. Russell’s unbeaten 88 from 36 balls in a total of 202/6 proved in vain in the first match – Chennai winning by five wickets with a ball to spare – but Kolkata hit back to score 180/4 in 17.4 overs to win the second by six wickets.
Kolkata Knight Riders might have lost their last two matches, including defeat to Chennai Super Kings, but you must always be wary of a wounded animal. The Knight Riders are the same odds as the Super Kings with Bet365 (1.90 to win) and favourites with Betway at 1.83.
Kolkata Knight Riders have lost two in a row, while Chennai Super Kings are in outstanding form, but their poor innings last time out was a one-off and the form of Andre Russell gives plenty of cause for optimism for the hosts at Eden Gardens.
